BLUE MOUNTAIN, Miss. - It has been nearly a month since the University of Mobile Women's Basketball team has seen regular-season action, last playing on Dec. 11. Mobile saw several games either canceled or postponed due to COVID-19 protocols over the last couple of weeks, including an important home game against conference rival Loyola University last week. The Rams of Mobile finally returned to the court over the weekend on Saturday, Jan. 8 for a conference game against Blue Mountain College and showed little rust as Mobile managed to earn a 20-point victory over the Toppers, 70-50.
In the victory, Mobile managed to score at least 14 points in all four quarters, including 21 points in the final quarter of the game. The defense was on display as well for the Rams as Mobile allowed just seven Blue Mountain points in the second quarter and did not allow over 17 points in any quarter of the game for the Toppers. At the break, the Rams led Blue Mountain, 32-23.Â
Saturday saw Mobile shoot 46% from the floor, an encouraging number for a team that has not played in three and a half weeks. 48 of Mobile's 70 points came from in the paint. The Rams also recorded a 66% free-throw percentage, going 10-15 from the line. The negative for Mobile on Saturday came from deep as Mobile shot 0-9 from the three-point line in the game.Â
Second-year freshman D'Mya Ferguson led Mobile in scoring with 16 points from off the bench in the win, the second time this season where Ferguson has led the team in offense. Ferguson was near perfect from the floor, finishing 7-8 on the afternoon. She played 22 minutes.
Sidney Sims also had a nice game in Mobile's return to the court finishing with 14 points and seven rebounds. Sims also mixed in one assist and a block in the victory. Meanwhile, MacKenzie White was one point away from a double-double on Saturday, finishing with a team-high 10 rebounds and nine points. White also led the team with two blocks over the weekend.
With Mobile's conference win on the road over the weekend, the Rams advanced their overall record to 8-3 on the season and 2-1 in SSAC play. Mobile was originally scheduled to face Xavier University of Louisiana on Monday, Jan. 10 in New Orleans, but that game has since been canceled. Mobile will now return to action on Thursday, Jan. 13 for a conference game against Brewton-Parker College at 5:30 p.m. CT in Pharr Gymnasium.
