MOBILE, Ala. - The University of Mobile Baseball team continued the roll they have been on over the last couple of weeks, sweeping Southeastern Baptist College in a non-conference doubleheader at Jacobs Field on Tuesday, Mar. 29. The two wins for Mobile gives the team six victories in their last seven games and extends the Rams' winning streak to three games. Prior to Tuesday's doubleheader, Mobile won two of three games against the then 19th-ranked Crusaders of William Carey a couple of weekends ago, and managed to take two of three games against the defending SSAC Baseball Champions Loyola (La.) this past weekend in New Orleans, La. On Tuesday evening, it was all Mobile as the Rams cruised to two wins over the Chargers. Both games were scheduled seven-inning games.
Game One Recap: Mobile 10, Southeastern Baptist 2
Samuel Plash got the party started in the runs column in game one, driving a ball to deep left center field for a three-run homer in the bottom of the first inning. Plash's first inning home run gives him four in his last four games played, and seven total on the 2022 season, which leads the team. Sam Bowman also drove in a run in the bottom of the first via a sacrifice fly to center field.
With a 4-0 lead entering the middle innings, the Rams pushed across four more runs in the bottom of the fourth. Lex Singleton drove in two in the fourth inning with a single to center field. The following inning, the Chargers finally managed to hit the scoreboard with two runs in the fifth inning, cutting Mobile's lead to six runs.
In the bottom of the sixth, the Rams added two insurance runs off the strength of two solo home runs. Tucker Musgrove blasted a no-doubt shot to left for his fifth homer of the season, and Sam Bowman hit one off the Jacobs Field scoreboard a couple of batters later for his first collegiate home run. The Rams went on to defeat the Chargers, 10-2.
On the mound, Mobile Head Coach Jon Seymour sent six pitchers to the mound. Jeffrey Griffin took the mound for the first time this season as he is coming off an injury. Griffin threw two scoreless innings in game one. Jaden Brown was awarded the win, coming on in the third inning and putting up a 1-2-3 inning. Brown improves to 2-0 on the mound in his freshman year.
Samuel Plash finished 1-for-2 at the plate with a homer (7) and three RBIs. Plash also mixed in a walk and scored two of Mobile's 10 runs in the victory. Both Tucker Musgrove and Lex Singleton finished 2-for-3 with two RBIs each in the win. Sam Bowman joined Musgrove and Singleton with two RBIs as he finished 1-for-3 at the dish.
Game Two Recap: Mobile 5, Southeastern Baptist 0
In game two, the pitching was dominant over the Chargers as five Mobile pitchers combined to shut out Southeastern Baptist. Caleb Coffey got the start and threw two scoreless innings, allowing just one hit. Coffey struck out one batter. Matthew Holston followed Coffey by throwing two innings as well, not allowing a hit in seven batters faced. Holston was awarded the win in just his third appearance on the mound this season to improve to 1-0 this year.
At the plate, Christian Waltman had a great game, smoking two long home runs to left center field in his first two at-bats across the first and third innings. Waltman finished 2-for-2 with his two dingers and three RBIs. He also walked once.
Mobile managed to score two more runs in the third inning following a J.T. Lastorka double to shallow center. Lastorka reached second while advancing base-runner Samuel Plash to third following the double. However, the Southeastern Baptist defense began throwing the ball around the field, which eventually scored both Plash and Lastorka following two errors. From the third inning, the score held from there, 5-0.
Across both games, Mobile pitching allowed just one earned run across 14 innings of work. A total of 11 pitchers saw action for the Rams on Tuesday. At the plate, Mobile out-hit the Chargers 15-8 while out-scoring the opposition, 15-2.
Mobile returns to conference play this upcoming weekend with a three-game series against Brewton-Parker College in Mount Vernon, Ga. The series is set to begin with a doubleheader on Friday, Apr. 1 at 2:00 p.m. CT, with the series finale to follow on Saturday, Apr. 2 at 12:00 p.m. CT.
