H. AUSTILL PHARR GYMNASIUM, MOBILE, Ala. - In the SSAC Women's Basketball Game of the Week in Pharr Gymnasium, the University of Mobile Women's Basketball team hosted Faulkner University on Saturday afternoon, Jan. 7, and eventually fell to the Eagles 63-60, dropping their overall record to 7-10 on the season. With the loss, Mobile's conference record falls to 3-4 as the Rams have now started the 2023 portion of the season at 0-2.
Time Runs Out on Mobile
In a game where Faulkner led for the majority of the 40 minutes played over Mobile, holding a 29-22 lead at halftime, it was the Rams who put together a strong second half to mount a comeback on the Eagles. In the third quarter alone, both teams scored 19 points each, while the Rams outscored Faulkner in the fourth, 19-15. With just over seven minutes left in the game, Mobile saw their first lead since early in the first quarter, going up by four points. However, Faulkner managed to reclaim the lead for good with just five seconds remaining and held Mobile without a shot in the closing seconds. The Eagles came away with the three-point win over Mobile, handing the Rams just their second loss on their home court this season.
As a team, Mobile shot 37% from the floor, despite shooting just 23% through the first half. Mobile's best quarter offensively came in the fourth where the team shot 56%, making nine shots. From the free throw line, the Rams went 7-for-10, while knocking down three three-point shots in the process. The Rams out-rebounded Faulkner, 40-30.
Individually, Miya Kimber put together her best game of the season, securing her first double-double of the year. Kimber totaled a season-high 14 points and a career-high 16 rebounds in the loss on Saturday, while leading all players on the floor with her rebound total. Kimber was joined by Erica Jones and MacKenzie White who all finished with 14 points in the defeat. Meanwhile, Claire Worth finished with 11 points and led Mobile with two steals.
Conference Rival Up Next
With Mobile dropping the first two games of the new year, the Rams will look to get back into the win column on Thursday, Jan. 12 as they host conference rival William Carey in Pharr Gymnasium. Next Thursday's game is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. CT and is expected to be played in front of the largest crowd of the season so far.
