BLUE MOUNTAIN, Miss. - It was a big night for the University of Mobile Volleyball team as the Rams put together a straight-set win over Blue Mountain Christian University (Miss.) on Friday night, Sept. 13. Blue Mountain has won each of the last two SSAC Volleyball Championship titles and has managed a seven-match win streak over Mobile prior to Friday's matchup. Mobile's last win over Blue Mountain came during the 2022 campaign as the Rams earned a 3-0 win over the Toppers at home. The last win on the road against Blue Mountain for Mobile came during the 2021 season.
On Friday, Mobile notched a 25-22, 25-16, 26-24 sweep over the Toppers. The massive victory for the Rams is Mobile's third-straight sweep over conference competition to open the SSAC portion of the season, with the overall recording moving to 13-3 in the process. Mobile currently sits atop the SSAC Volleyball standings with a 3-0 conference record.
Rams Top the Toppers in Convincing Fashion
In set one to open the night in northeast Mississippi, both teams collected 14 kills, with Mobile making four less attack errors than Blue Mountain. The Rams followed their 14-kill first set with 16 kills in set two, while holding the Toppers to just 10. From there, momentum kept building for Mobile into set three as the Rams ended the match with 18 kills in the eventual third and final set, hitting a match-best .268 in the process.
Mobile consistently improved by two kills in every set, while raising the hitting percentage by over 10 points. The Rams finished with a .250 attack percentage on the night against Blue Mountain's defense, with 48 kills and just 18 errors. Meanwhile, Blue Mountain recorded 37 kills in the loss to the Rams.
Corrina Porch-Maxey led all players in the match with 13 kills, hitting .357 on the night. She was followed closely by Dazsha Dean Middleton with 11 kills and Aspen Adams with 10. Middleton paced the offense with an impressive .526 attack percentage on 19 total attempts.
The two-setter combo of Tatum Beech and Layton Adams racked up 37 combined assists, with Beech recording 19 and Adams tallying 18. Starting libero Jaci Drinnon came away with six assists across the three sets, while pacing the defense with 18 digs. Lexi Gillette and Aspen Adams followed with 10 digs a piece.
Road Trip Continues on Saturday
Coming off the big Friday night, Mobile is set for two additional matches on Saturday afternoon, Sept. 14 in Pulaski, Tenn. The Rams will face UT-Southern (Tenn.) in a conference matchup at 1:00 p.m. CT, following that with a non-conference match against Fisk University (Tenn.) at 3:00 p.m. CT.
Both matches will be played on UT-Southern's court on campus.
