Volleyball Wins Two Weekend Matches to Sit Alone at the Top of SSAC Standings

Rams take care of business against Loyola and William Carey to complete season sweeps over both.

NEW ORLEANS, La. & HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The University of Mobile volleyball team took care of business this weekend, beating Loyola in 4 sets on Friday evening before earning a second sweep over William Carey to claim both series in the 2025 SSAC regular season. Prior to this weekend's matches, Mobile, Loyola, and William Carey all sat in a three way tie at the top of the SSAC standings. Following the two victories over their rivals, Mobile volleyball now sits alone at the top of the standings with an 8-2 conference record with just 6 SSAC matches left to be played before the conference tournament.

Game One Recap | Mobile @ Loyola (3-1 | 19-25, 25-23, 26-24, 25-13)

Mobile got things kicked off on Friday as they hit the road to face the Wolfpack in New Orleans in the SSAC Volleyball Game of the Week. Mobile got off to a slow start as they hit just .128 in the first set with 12 kills and 6 errors with Loyola taking the first set 25-19. Following the break, Mobile would start to turn things around, battling back and forth with Loyola in sets two and three with Mobile edging out two point wins in both sets to take the lead two sets to one. The Rams would complete the comeback in set four, jumping out to a 10-2 lead early on before going on to win 25-13 in dominant fashion.

Corrina Porch-Maxey had a great night against the Wolfpack racking up 14 kills on 31 attacks with a .291 hitting percentage. Peyton Frazer followed her with 10 kills while Emily Osborne had 7 kills. The dynamic setter duo of Emma McPherson and Hannah Ellis combined for 40 assists (22 and 18 respectively) in the victory with Ellis getting a double-double after getting 10 digs. Jaci Drinnon led the Rams with 16 digs followed by Georgia Simmons with 11, Ellis with 10, and Hope Blaylock with 9.

Game Two Recap | Mobile @ William Carey (3-0 | 25-14, 26-15, 25-16)

Less than 24 hours later, the Rams would turn around and travel to Hattiesburg in a match that would determine the sole possessor of the #1 spot in the SSAC standings. Having swept the Crusaders in the home match earlier in the season, the Rams were confident in their ability to make it two for two against their rivals this season. That confidence would show itself in complete fashion as the Rams outperformed the Crusaders in almost every single stat in the box score.

Set one saw Mobile go on a 7 point run halfway through the set to take a 21-10 lead. William Carey would burn both timeouts during the run to try and stop Mobile, but it wouldnt be enough as Mobile would collect set one 25-14. With momentum on the side of Mobile, set two followed a similar pattern with Mobile going on several smaller runs early on to take a 10-4 lead before the Crusaders called their first timeout. Following several more small runs for the Rams, Mobile led 21-13 making their opponents use their second timeout to try and regroup for a last push. The Rams were unfazed and took the set 25-15. Everything would continue to go the way of the Rams, with the third set going to Mobile 25-16, giving the Rams the match and series sweep over the Crusaders.

Peyton Frazer was a force to be reckoned with, racking up 12 kills on 27 attacks with a .370 hitting percentage. The attack was assisted by Emma Hampton with 9 kills while Sophie Dorris and Corrina Porch-Maxey tied with 8. Emma McPherson continued her stellar season with 24 assists while Hannah Ellis pitched in with 15 of her own. Jaci Drinnon again anchored the defense, tallying 25 digs while Georgia Simmons chipped in with 9.

Up Next for the Rams

The Rams return home next weekend, facing Brewton-Parker College on Friday the 17 at 6:00pm CT, before turning around for a rematch against Life University on Saturday the 18th at 1:00pm CT.
