Volleyball Bows Out of NAIA National Tournament

Rams fall to Corban and Missouri Baptist in Pool E

TYSON EVENTS CENTER | SIOUX CITY, Iowa. - After advancing out of the opening round for the first time since 2016, the University of Mobile Volleyball team made their way to Sioux City, Iowa for the 2025 edition of the NAIA Volleyball National Championship tournament. The Rams were placed in Pool E along with the Warriors of Corban University and the Spartans of Missouri Baptist University, setting up rematches with two teams that had eliminated them in the opening round in the past two seasons. Mobile faced Corban in the opening round during the 2024 season where they were swept 3-0 by the hosts. In 2023, Mobile traveled to St. Louis, Missouri to face the Spartans in the opening round and were sent home empty handed, falling in three sets.

Game One Recap | Mobile vs. Corban (0-3 | 18-25, 23-25, 18-25)

The Rams would get things started on Wednesday morning at 10am CT in the Tyson Events Center as they faced Corban University in the opening match of pool play. The home team of the Warriors would get the better start as they opened up a 13-7 lead that would be followed up by Mobile's first timeout of the set. Mobile would start to close the gap and trailed by two points as the score would read 12-14 when Corban would call their first timeout. The home side would come out of the timeout energized and score four straight to push momentum to their side as they would go on to claim the first set 25-18. Set two saw the teams start out on more even footing as neither side would hold more than a two point lead until late on. Mobile would claim the first 3+ point lead as they went on a 6-1 run to lead Corban 22-19. Unfortunately, the lead would not hold for long as the opponents would go on their own 6-1 run to take set two 25-23. The close lose in set two would hurt the Rams in set three as Corban looked confident on offense. The Rams would fall 25-18 in set three as they were unable to keep pace with their opponents stunning .538 third set hitting percentage.

Emma Hampton would lead all attackers for the Rams with 12 kills on a stellar .556 hitting percentage. Corrina Porch-Maxey was second on the team for kills with 8 while she lead the team in blocks with 4 block assists. Emma McPherson and Hannah Ellis both reached the 15 assists mark with McPherson leading her teammate by one with 16 assists. Jaci Drinnon was doing her best to cover the whole court as she was credited with 17 digs.

Game Two Recap | Mobile vs. Missouri Baptist (0-3 | 17-25, 22-25, 22-25)

Heading into game two of pool play just 24 hours later on Thursday morning, the Rams needed a sweep over Missouri Baptist to give themselves a chance at advancing out of pool play. A sweep over the Spartans, and a Spartans win over Corban on Friday, would have given the Rams a chance to move on to the knockout portion of the tournament based on tiebreakers. Moving on from pool play would not be in the cards for the Rams though as Missouri Baptist would sweep them to bring about an early end to the season. Mobile were able to keep it close in sets two and three, but they would fall 22-25 in both sets as the Spartans maintained a greater hitting percentage throughout the match.

Corrina Porch-Maxey led the side with 11 kills on a .296 hitting percentage while teammate Peyton Frazer followed up her performance with 7 kills of her own. Hannah Ellis and Emma McPherson both dished out 12 assists while McPherson lead the team with 10 digs. Emily Osborne had 1 solo block and 4 block assists in what was a strong defensive game at the net for her.

Up Next for the Rams

The 2025 season comes to a close for the Mobile volleyball team with a majority of the players now turning their attention to the 2026 Beach Volleyball season where they will look to make a second straight NAIA National Invitational Tournament appearance. Though it wasn't quite the end that the team would have hoped for, the 2025 season as a whole was a fantastic run that showcased the strength and resilience that the squad had after losing several starters from the previous year. Mobile will hope to find replacements for SSAC Player of the Year Corrina Porch-Maxey and back-to-back SSAC Defender of the Year Jaci Drinnon as they recruit for the 2026 season.
