SILSBY FIELD | TALLADEGA, Ala. - The Mobile Rams Baseball team found themselves leaving Talladega with a win on Tuesday, splitting a doubleheader series, both of which were seven inning games, against the Tornadoes. The Rams began Tuesday's play by falling 7-14, but redeemed themselves just a few hours later. This time, they put up the same amount of runs, but found themselves in the win column with a 7-5 victory. The Rams are now 2-12 with a little bit of momentum heading into a one-game stand against Stillman College next week.
Game 1 - Mobile 7, Talladega 14
The Rams had trouble putting away the Tornadoes the first few innings of play, with multiple runs coming through, building up an 8-1 lead through three innings. However, the Rams also let runs cross the plate, with Trevor Murphy beginning the scoring for Mobile with an RBI single into left field in the top of the third. The fourth inning was also vital for the Rams, as they saw three runs come home. This was thanks to a Wil King walk with the bases loaded. There were also runs scored courtesy of an RBI fielder's choice from Eli Smith, and a sacrifice fly from Dylan Moran. The Tornadoes then responded in the bottom half of the inning, with two RBIs coming home from a single and a triple. This would build up a 12-4 lead for Talladega at the end of the fourth, before the Rams responded with their final runs of the game in the next two innings of play. Jake Hammonds took first base on yet another bases loaded walk, allowing their fifth run of the game to score. Mobile would see their final runs come across on a Colton Wood home run into left field. The Tornadoes eventually found their groove hitting-wise, scoring runs on a double and a single (both into center field) in the sixth inning, capping off the runs in a 7-14 loss for the Rams.
Pitching wise, Brody Swindle was credited with the loss after a rough 2 ? innings. In terms of batting, there were six different Rams in the starting lineup that had RBIs to their name. Colton Wood was by far the most effective, finishing 2-for-4 with two RBI in the stat sheet.
Game 2 - Mobile 7, Talladega 5
The Rams started off their second game on the right foot, with Trevor Murphy's sacrifice fly plating the first run of the game. After keeping the game knotted up at one run a piece, the Rams extended their lead in the second and third innings. Of all things, it was a balk by the Tornadoes pitcher that allowed Ethan Hilpert to score the second run for Mobile. The very next inning, Reed Wilson left the yard for the third time this season, with his two-run homer into left field extending the lead to 4-1 in favor of the visitors. While the Rams struggled defensively to limit the runs coming home for the Tornadoes, the bats continued to come to life every top half of the inning for Mobile. A sacrifice fly from Jake Hammonds in the fourth inning continued the scoring for the Rams, making their lead 5-3 after Talladega had just trimmed their deficit. The fourth and fifth innings were tough for the Rams, as they allowed the hosts to finally catch up and tie the game. After Christian Sanchez provided a scoreless sixth inning, it was Colton Wood who went opposite field with a two run-homer, making the score 7-5 for the Rams. Wood's second home run of the series was the dagger for the Rams, as Macks Bishop came in for the bottom of the seventh and ended the game for Mobile on three straight strikeouts.
Starting pitcher Jacob Thompson was credited with the much needed win for the Rams, with solid relief pitching also stepping in to help win the game. The bats were once again solid in the second game, with five hitters from the starting nine finishing with hits, and four players finishing with an RBI to their name. Notably, Ethan Hilpert went 2-for-4, and Wil King also collected two hits through three at bats.
