Men's Basketball Makes Great Run at SSAC Men's Basketball Championship

Thrilling overtime loss to Dalton State sees season end in quarterfinals of conference tournament

MULTIPLEX AT CRAMTON BOWL | MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The University of Mobile Men's Basketball team traveled to Montgomery, Alabama as the West #4 seed in the SSAC Men's Basketball Tournament. The Rams would start their tournament off with a day one game against the East #5 seed Thomas University. That game would be one of only two during the entire conference tournament that would feature overtime, with the Rams taking a 73-69 win over the Night Hawks to book their place in the quarterfinals against the East #1 seed Dalton State. In the match against Dalton State, the Rams would once again provide a show for those who watched along, forcing overtime against the Roadrunners in a close affair that saw Mobile get slowly choked out of the game by fouls on both ends.

Game One - Mobile 73, Thomas 69

Coming into the day one meeting against Thomas, the Rams were the more favored team as they held the higher seed out of the western division. The Night Hawks however did not let that bother them as they jumped ahead in the first half to hold a 29-22 lead at the halftime break. Zion Hunter was leading the way for Mobile in that opening 20 minutes, grabbing 5 rebounds to go along with 11 points and 3 steals.

With a lead to chase after in the second half, Mobile gave it everything as they clawed back from what was, at the 12:27 mark, a 16 point lead for Thomas. The Rams would finally tie thing up with 26 seconds to go on a lay-up by Mason Sword. After forcing a turnover, Aahmod Scarbrough would miss a 3-pointer, which sent the game into overtime. The Rams would take care of business in overtime, outscoring their opposition 9-5 as they claimed their opening round win and set up a meeting with Dalton State at 3:15pm the next day.

Four different Rams would score 10+ points, with Aahmod Scarborugh, Mason Sword, Zion Hunter, and Kristiyan Vasilev all reaching the mark. Vasilev would record a double-double in the win as he added 10 boards to his name.

Game Two - Mobile 93, Dalton State 95

Trying to follow up their performance from the day before, the Rams came prepared to battle against a good Roadrunners side that they beat earlier during the regular season. Things would not be so easy for the Rams this time around as Dalton State would close out the first half strong, taking a 5 point lead into the break. Mobile were already beginning to see the early signs of foul trouble coming on as they picked up 12 fouls in total through the first 20 minutes with no player having more than 2 to their name.

The second half saw both sides hold the lead for varying amounts of time before the Roadrunners claimed the lead with less than 2 minutes remaining. Aahmod Scarbrough would go to the free throw line and make both as he cut the lead down to 1 point. After some free throws on the other made it a 3 point game again, Mason Sword would get sent to the line with 4 seconds to play. Sword would make the first before missing the second off the front of the rim. With the ball still in the air, Dayton Richardson jumped into the lane, grabbed the ball, and put it away to tie it all up at 78-78 and send things into overtime.

In overtime, Mobile would find themselves without Mo Kamara, Zion Hunter, and Kristiyan Vasilev as the first two would foul out of the game, leaving the Rams a lack of height on the floor. The entirety of overtime would consist of fouls and free throws with Dalton State having the better time at the line. In the end, the Rams would take a tough 93-95 loss that saw their season come to an end much earlier than they would have hoped. The game as a whole saw 60 fouls called between the two sides, with 90 free throws being taken during the contest.

Aahmod Scarbrough showed his best one final time for the Rams, ending the game with 36 points, 5 assists, 4 rebounds, and a steal. Mason Sword had an impressive 24 point game, while Dayton Richardson recorded a double-double with 13 points, 11 rebounds.
