Women's Basketball Sees 2025-2026 Season End at SSAC Tournament

Rams fall to Loyola as tough season comes to a close

MULTIPLEX AT CRAMTON BOWL | MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The University of Mobile Women's Basketball team entered the SSAC Women's Basketball Tournament as the #9 seed with the Rams set for a first round meeting against the Barons of Bretwon-Parker Christian. For Mobile, the opening round would pose no trouble, as they dealt with the Barons, setting up a meeting with the #1 seed Wolf Pack of Loyola in the quarterfinals. While dreams do come true from time to time, it was not to be for Mobile as they fell to Loyola for the third time this season. The loss in the tournament sees their season end earlier than it has the previous two years when the team made the NAIA Women's Basketball Tournament Opening Round.

Game One - Mobile 90, Brewton-Parker 71

The Rams would tip things off in the Multiplex at Cramton Bowl at 1:45pm, with the Rams and Barons having very little to separate them through the opening 20 minutes of play. Jada Johnson would leading the scoring for Mobile at the half with 10 points, while Deja Pryor would find herself second in the scoring charts after a 9 point second quarter. At the half, the teams were tied up at 38-38 with just 20 more minutes left to determine who would advance, and who's season would come to an end.

In the third quarter, it would be the Rams who would find the steam to pull ahead as Deja Pryor carried her performance over for 10 more points. Cierra Highland, Emilee Duet, Jada Johnson, and Hannah Benoit would combine for another 11 points in the quarter as Mobile took a six point lead into the fourth quarter. If there was any doubt about which team had the momentum, it would be completely erased in the final ten minutes as Mobile outscored Brewton-Parker Christian 31-18 in the final quarter to seal a big win to start off the tournament. Cierra Highland led the way with 9 points in that final quarter while five other Rams would join her in the box score as Mobile opened up their tournament run with a 90-71 win.

Hannah Benoit made the most of her time on the floor, putting up 7 points, 7 rebounds, 4 assists, and 1 steal in just 17 minutes. Deja Pryor would finish the day with 25 points, while Mobile's next two highest scorers were Cierra Highland with 17, and Jada Johnson with 14.

Game Two - Mobile 54, Loyola 72

Coming off the back of a good win, the Rams would need their absolute best from everyone in their next game as they faced the #1 seeded Wolf Pack of Loyola. Having lost to Loyola a little under two weeks prior at home, the Rams were looking for a chance to get one back. The first half would see the Rams slip behind on the scoreboard as they trailed 11-19 after the first, and 24-40 at the half. Mobile had 9 different players find the basket in the first half, with no Ram scoring more than 5 total points in that time.

The third quarter saw Mobile push back against Loyola, with the Rams outscoring their opponents 16-13 to cut the lead down to 11 points. Jada Johnson and Cierra Highland would do most of the scoring for Mobile in the quarter, with Johnson shooting 3-5 from the field for 7 points, while Highland added on 5 of her own. While the Rams made headway in the 3rd quarter, the 4th quarter would not prove as fruitful as Mobile would fall behind in the scoring charts again to see Loyola claim the win with a final score of 54-72. With the loss, the Rams saw their season come to a close as their overall record leaves them unlikely to see an at-large bid from the NAIA for the national tournament in March.

Jada Johnson ended her time at Mobile with a solid 19 point, 6 rebound, 4 steal, 1 assist, and 1 block game. Cierra Highland's time at Mobile would also come to an end after her 11 point, 5 rebound, 1 block performance.
