Rams Shock Crusaders to Claim Series Win

Baseball claim two wins over SSAC rivals at Mike Jacobs Field

JACOBS FIELD | MOBILE, Ala. - Following their non-conference meeting with the Faulkner Eagles, the Rams turned their attention to another big home series. Friday evening saw an old rivalry renewed for another installment as the Rams faced the Crusaders of William Carey University at Mike Jacobs Field. Mobile would be viewed as the underdogs heading into the series, with the visiting Crusaders coming in as the #13 ranked team in the NAIA this season. Despite the visitor's advantage in the polls, nobody could have predicted what happened on the field as Mobile took a loss on Friday before taking both Saturday games to the wire where they would ultimately claim victory in the series.

Opening up the series on Friday, the Rams saw an early glimpse of what was to come as Trevor Murphy opened the scoring with a single down the left field line to score Eli Smith. While things looked good for Mobile through the first inning, the next six innings would prove trouble as the Crusaders built up a comfortable lead over Mobile. The Rams would score a few consolation runs in the bottom of the 7th, but the damage was too great as Mobile fell 23-5 in the series opener.

Following the events of the previous night's game, the Rams looked to redeem themselves by putting on a better showing on the field. Redeem themselves they would, as Mobile showcased consistent hitting across 7 innings to sneak a 7-6 win over the Crusaders and leave the series tied 1-1 heading into game two of the doubleheader. Adrian Salas provided most of the scoring for Mobile as his 2 hits brought home 4 runners. Jacob Thompson was solid in his relief appearance, throwing 4 clean innings and striking out 2 batters.

In the series finale, things would begin to get electric on the field. The Rams would once again take the lead in the first inning after Adrian Salas singled to see Weston Tubbs come home to score. Mobile's lead would hold steady through the first four innings, but the Crusaders had an answer in the 5th, pushing home 4 runs to take a 4-1 lead. Things would get worse in the top of the 6th as William Carey added on 3 more runs to take a 7-1 lead. From here on out it was all Mobile though with 2 runs coming home in the bottom of the 6th to start closing in on the lead. A phenomenal bottom of the 8th saw four more runs come home as the Rams leveled things up 7-7. In the top of the ninth, Alexis Rodriguez Ruiz would step on the mound for the Rams to try and keep the Crusaders offense at bay. Alexis would throw 4 stunning innings for Mobile, striking out 7 batters as the Rams and Crusaders battled to the 12th inning. When things mattered the most, the Rams showed up as Ethan Plank put the ball in play with 2 Rams on base, and with the help of a defensive error, Grant Driver would come home, giving Mobile a 9-8 win and the series victory over the Crusaders.

Up Next for the Rams

Mobile takes on former SSAC opponent Talladega College in a home doubleheader on March 31st. That series can be watched live, for free, on Urban Edge Network with first pitch scheduled for 1:00pm CT on Tuesday.
