Rams Dominate Top 25 Doubleheader Against Firehawks

Mobile climb over UT-Southern in SSAC standings

UM SOFTBALL FIELD | MOBILE, Ala. - The Rams kicked off their weekend early with an NAIA Top 25 meeting against the #19 ranked Firehawks of UT-Southern. The #14 Rams would play hosts for the conference doubleheader as both teams found themselves near the top of the SSAC standings. For UT-Southern, they sat atop the conference standings with a 9-1 conference record while the Rams sat in third with a conference record of 8-2. At the end of the day, it would be two big wins for the Rams as they swept the doubleheader to overtake the Firehawks in the SSAC standings.

Mobile opened up game one with a 3-run bottom of the first with the first run coming on a passed ball that allowed Daryelin Rivas to score. Lillie Lanham's at bat would prove fruitful as she hit a deep ball to center field that would be dropped as the Rams saw two more runs come across home plate. In the bottom of the third, the Rams would find two more runs with Lillie Lanham getting a single through the right side to score Diana Arcay from third. Later on in the same inning, Miah Simmons would work a bases loaded walk to bring home Braylee Bird and make it a 5-1 ball game. Avery Harrell would complete 6 innings for the Rams, striking out 2 batters before being relieved by Katelynn Kempton. Kempton would inherit a 5-3 game in the top of the 7th and would see out a 3 up, 3 down inning to close things out with a 5-3 Ram win in game one.

Miah Simmons would get the start in the circle in game two with Kaitlynn Robertson taking over responsibilities at first while Braylee Bird got the start at second base. Both teams would showcase stellar fielding through the first two innings, with neither team able to open the scoring despite putting multiple runners on base. Mobile would break the deadlock in the bottom of the third as Diana Arcay hit a sacrifice fly to right field, giving Bethany Dean enough time to score at home. The Firehawks would rattle off 3 runs of their own in the next inning, leaving the Rams trailing 1-3 as they headed into the bottom of the fourth. The floodgates would break open at this point as Mobile piled on 5 runs as they batted around the order. Heading into the top of the fifth, Katelynn Kempton would enter the circle, coming up against a UT-Southern side that was determined to show their fighting spirit. The Firehawks would add on another run to their tally, while leaving 2 runners on base, closing Mobile's lead to just 2 runs heading into the final two innings. The top of the sixth inning would see Riley Smith enter in to pitch for the Rams as she looked to close things out. The Firehawks would add a run in the top of the 6th and the 7th, but two insurance runs for Mobile in the bottom of the sixth would give Mobile all they needed to claim the win as they swept UT-Southern to move to 10-2 in conference play this season. Mobile now sit in second place in the SSAC standings, just one spot behind William Carey University who are 11-1 in SSAC play this season.
