Rams Finish 5th at NAIA Softball World Series

Mobile competes at World Series for first time since 2022, but sees the 2026 season end short of the Red Banner

SOUTH COMMONS COMPLEX | COLUMBUS, Ga. - Over the past week, the University of Mobile Rams Softball team was back at the NAIA Softball World Series competing for what would have been their first Red Banner since 2006. That national championship title also serves as the last one for any Mobile sport with multiple teams having come close to grabbing another in the 20 years since. In similar fashion to the NAIA Softball Opening Round held at the UM Softball Field, the NAIA Softball World Series site in Columbus was plagued by rain and thunderstorms throughout the week, forcing multiple games to be rescheduled and delayed a day or two.

As the #4 seeded team in the tournament, the Rams opened things up against Our Lady of the Lake University (Texas) on Thursday afternoon, with a dominant 9-1 run-rule victory sending the Rams through to the next match where they would eventually discover that their opponent would be the #1 seeded Crusaders of Madonna University (Michigan). The aforementioned rain and thunderstorms would prevent that game from happening on Saturday as planned, with it eventually being moved to Monday at 5:15pm CT. In that game, Mobile would fall 5-2 with a 7th inning comeback appearing to be in the making before being shutdown by the Crusaders. Having fallen into the losers bracket, the Rams would once again face Our Lady of the Lake in what would become an 0-1 loss to drop the Rams out of the tournament.

GAME ONE | Mobile - 9, Our Lady of the Lake - 1

In the first game of the tournament, the Rams would face a familiar opponent in Our Lady of the Lake University, having faced the Saints earlier in the season during the Gulf Coast Invitational where the Rams won 2-1. In Columbus, it would be the Saints who stuck first as they would take a 1-0 lead on a fielder's choice. Mobile would not be behind for long though as the bottom of the first saw Diana Arcay drive home 2 runs on a single up the middle before Lillie Lanham picked up an RBI single to left center. In the bottom of the third, the Rams would pile on the runs as Bethany Dean, Madeline Houk, and Gracie Mitchell all recorded RBI singles. One extra run would score for the Rams in the third while they would add on one more run in each of the fourth and the fifth innings. The run in the bottom of the fifth would come home on a Lillie Lanham single to center field, making Gracie Mitchell's run the 9th for her side in a 9-1 run-rule victory in just 5 innings.

Lillie Lanham would be named the player of the game as she recorded 4 hits, 2 RBIs, and 2 runs alongside a perfect fielding percentage. Gracie Mitchell, Kaitlynn Robertson, Diana Arcay, and Bethany Dean would all join Lanham in having multiple hits against the Saints.

Game Two | Mobile - 2, Madonna - 5

Facing the #1 seeded team in the tournament, the Rams entered the game knowing the challenge that awaited them. The Rams would battle with Madonna throughout the game, but would fall behind in the third on a 2-run homer over the left field wall. The opposition would add on three more runs in the fifth inning, leaving the Rams needing 5 runs in just two innings to keep themselves alive in the winner's bracket. After a scoreless sixth, the Rams began to find their groove in the seventh as Lillie Lanham would earn a 4-pitch walk before advancing to second after Miah Simmons singled through the right side. With runners on first and second, the Rams would find themselves needing three more runs with 2 outs already on the board. Madeline Houk would keep the dream alive on a double down the left field line which saw Lanham round third to score. Lucy Spisto would follow that up with a single to the short stop as the pinch runner for Simmons, Bella Bullington, would score. Daryelin Rivas would follow that up with a 4-pitch walk to load the bases and put the go-ahead run at the plate in Gracie Mitchell. Unfortunately, not all stories have a fairytale ending as Mitchell would ground out to the short stop, just barely being beat out by the throw to first. With the third out, the Rams would suffer their first defeat and head to the loser's bracket where they would once again face Our Lady of the Lake.

Game Three | Mobile - 0, Our Lady of the Lake - 1

In a game that was originally scheduled for Monday night, the Rams would face Our Lady of the Lake on Tuesday morning as inclement weather continued to haunt the Columbus, Georgia area. For Mobile, they would never really get things going in this game as they had on Thursday as they managed just 2 total hits compared to the 15 they had before. The closest the Rams would come to scoring came in the bottom of the first as they had runners on both first and second base before a double play would wipe away the runners and close out the inning. The Rams would have a runner on second in the bottom of the seventh as they trailed 0-1, but with 2 outs already on the board a fly out to center field would end the Rams' hopes of a Red Banner.

Up Next for the Rams

For a majority of the team, they will now head into the off-season for a well deserved rest before returning in the fall semester to begin preparations for the 2027 season. For Avery Harrell, Lillie Lanham, Madeline Houk, and Erin Degruise, their time as a player for Mobile comes to an end with the 4 seniors set to begin their post-college lives in their respective career fields. While their time as a student-athlete has come to an end, their time as a Ram has not as they will always remain a part of the Ram Family no matter where life may take them. Once a Ram, Always a Ram.
