Men's Basketball History

OVERALL PROGRAM RECORD: 762-481

2024-2025

Finished up their season 22-8 while falling in the SSAC tournament to Life University. The Rams were able to get a bid to the NAIA Championship Tournament falling in the second round of that tournament as well to University of the Cumberlands (Ky.) 

Ezra McKenna earned First Team All-Conference while Trent Moye earned Second Team All-Conference. Zion Hunter and Kaiden Francis earned spots on the SSAC All-Freshman Team. 


2023-24

Finished the season with a 21-9 overall record, just missing out on an at-large bid to the NAIA Men's Basketball Championship Tournament. Fell in the semifinals of the SSAC Men's Basketball Championship Tournament to regular season conference champs UT-Southern.

Ezra McKenna named SSAC Men's Basketball Player of the Year, while earning NAIA Second-Team All-America honors, the first since 2005 for the program. McKenna, along with DaMariee Jones, earned SSAC Men's Basketball First-Team All-Conference selections. McKenna went back-to-back as the SSAC Barnes & Noble College Scholar-Athlete of the Year and was later named the ASWA (Alabama Sports Writers Association) Small College Athlete of the Year. 

Three members named Daktronics NAIA Scholar-Athletes, while six earned SSAC All-Academic honors. 



2022-23

Produced first winning season in a decade, finishing 18-11 overall on the year and 12-8 in SSAC action. Handed the 2021-22 NAIA Men's Basketball National Champion Loyola University (La.) first loss at home in over two years during the season, and ended year with most road victories since 2004-05 season. 

Ezra McKenna was named NAIA All-American Honorable Mention, while earning SSAC First-Team All-Conference nods with teammate DaMariee Jones. Pooh Frazier earned a SSAC Second-Team All-Conference selection. Additionally, McKenna was named SSAC Barnes & Noble College Scholar-Athlete of the Year. 

2021-22

Ended the 2021-22 season 14-17 overall and 8-10 in conference play, while finishing 8-7 at home in Pharr Gymnasium. Mobile grabbed a couple of massive wins during the season, being one shot away from upsetting the No. 1 team in the nation and the eventual winner of the 2021-22 NAIA Men's Basketball National Championship, Loyola University (La.).

True freshman DaMariee Jones was named SSAC Men's Basketball Freshman of the Year and was joined by Ezra McKenna and Trent Moye on the SSAC Men's Basketball All-Freshman Team. Senior Gary Jefferson earned SSAC Men's Basketball First-Team All-Conference honors.


2020-21

Finished 11-11 during the season, the first time since 2014 where the team finished with a .500 record or higher. Rams finished 4-5 in SSAC play. 
RJ Kelly was selected to the SSAC First-Team All-Conference team. Alan Lang earned a SSAC Second-Team All-Conference selection.
 

2019-20

In the first season as head coach for the University of Mobile Men's Basketball program, former Butler University standout Darnell Archey led the Rams to a 13-16 overall record and a 7-11 SSAC record. This marks the most wins in four seasons for Mobile. Archey has recruited well and will look to bring in high-level talent to the Mobile program for the 2020-21 season.

2018-19

Finished 10-18 overall and 7-15 in SSAC action over the course of the season. This season would be the last for longtime head coach and former UM Athletic Director Joe Niland. Following the season, Niland would leave to take the Athletic Director position at Spring Hill College, a NCAA D-II school in Mobile, Ala. 

2017-18

Finished 12-19 overall and 6-12 in SSAC play. Lost to William Carey University in the first round of the SSAC Tournament. Offensively, the Rams were led by Tony-Toni Wright who scored 487 total points during the season in 1,019 minutes of play. Wright averaged 32.9 points per game. 

2016-17

Finished 9-21 overall and 5-15 in SSAC play. Lost in the first round of the SSAC Tournament to Blue Mountain. Darius Curry and Raykwon Fenton named SSAC All-Freshman Team. Lawrence Pierce named All-Academic and Dillon Pollard won Champion of Character. 

2015-16

Finished 15-16 overall and 8-10 in SSAC play. Lost in the first round of the SSAC Tournament to Loyola. Daouda Soumaoro named 2nd-Team All-Conference and Brandon Barnes named All-Freshman. Lawrence Pierce named Daktronics-NAIA Scholar-Athlete.
 

2014-15

Finished 11-18 overall and 6-12 in SSAC play. Brandon Morris named 1st-Team All-Conference. Daouda Soumaoro named 2nd-Team All-Conference and James Davis named All-Freshman. Cody Scott named Daktronics-NAIA Scholar-Athlete and CoSIDA Academic All-District.


2013-14

Finished 14-16 overall and 8-11 in SSAC play. Brandon Morris named 1st-Team All-Conference. Kwame Beard and Julien Sargent were named to the SSAC West All-Division Team and CJ McGill was named to the All-Freshman Team. Cody Scott was named Daktronics-NAIA Scholar-Athlete, CoSIDA Academic All-District and SSAC All-Academic. Season ended in SSAC Quarterfinals v. William Carey.


2012-13

Finished 16-14 overall and 8-10 in SSAC play. Cole Fountain named to SSAC All-Freshman Team. Marcus Polnett named Daktronics-NAIA Scholar-Athlete. Season ended in the SSAC Quarterfinals against William Carey.
 

2011-12

Finished 14-17 overall and 9-9 in SSAC play. Antonio Hester named SSAC Newcomer of the Year, 3rd-Team NAIA All-American and All-SSAC. Ji Kimbrough named All-SSAC. Jonathan Tinch and Cody Scott named All-Freshman.
 

2010-11

Finished 15-14 overall and 8-4 in first year of Southern States Athletic Conference play. Co-Division Champions with William Carey. Donte Walker named Honorable Mention NAIA All-American and All-SSAC. Ji Kimbrough named All-Division.
 

2009-10

Rams finished 17-11 overall and 10-8 in GCAC play. Season ended with a four-overtime loss to William Carey in the GCAC Quarterfinals. Ji Kimbrough was named GCAC Freshman of the Year, and was joined as a 1st-Team All-Conference member by Donte Walker. Defeated NCAA I Louisiana-Lafayette 68-64 on Nov. 24.
 

2008-09

Finished the season with a 16-16 overall record and 6-12 mark in Gulf Coast Athletic Conference action. Upset No. 1 seed Tougaloo College to advance to GCAC Tournament Semifinals before falling to Spring Hill College.
 

2007-08

Finished the season with a 22-10 overall record and 15-3 ledger in Gulf Coast Athletic Conference play. Lost to Xavier in the GCAC Tournament Semifinals, but received an at-large bid to the NAIA National Tournament. The Rams lost to Trevecca Nazarane 67-58 in the 1st-round. Robert Jones was named a 3rd-Team NAIA All-American after averaging 19 points and 18 rebounds. Jones and Walter Fitzgerald were named to the All-GCAC Team, and Donte Walker was named GCAC Freshman of the Year.
 

2006-07

Finished 19-14 overall, with a 10-8 Gulf Coast Athletic Conference Record. Lost to LSU-Shreveport in the GCAC Championship Game. Walter Fitzgerald was named 1st Team All-GCAC and Trey Rubin was named GCAC Freshman of the Year.
 

2005-06

Finished 22-8 overall, with a 11-3 Gulf Coast Athletic Conference Record. Finished second behind LSU-Shreveport in the regular season GCAC standings and were ousted in the first round of the conference tourney at the hands of Loyola 68-66. Mobile finished the season ranked #23 in the top 25 poll, behind only LSU-Shreveport (2) and Spring Hill (16) out of the GCAC. Lost in the first round of the NAIA National Tournament.
 

2004-05

Finished the season with a 30-6 overall record. Finished as the regular season co-champions along with LSU-Shreveport. Repeated as the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference Tournament champions. Lost to Oklahoma City University in the first round of the NAIA National Tournament.
 

2003-04

Finished the season with a 29-10 overall record.  Finished as regular season Co-Champions of the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference after posting a 13-5 record in conference action.  Won the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference Tournament for the first time in school history, defeating Southern University-New Orleans 59-56 in the championship game.  Advanced to the Final Four of the NAIA National Tournament, falling to Concordia University in the National Championship Semifinal.  Gimel Lewis, Tramaine Perry and Gabe Feagin were all named to the Gulf Coast Athletic All-Tournament Team and Lewis was named Gulf Coast Athletic Conference Tournament MVP. In addition, Perry and Lewis were named to the NAIA National All-Tournament Team.
 

2002-03

Finished the season with a 19-13 overall record.  Finished in fifth place in Gulf Coast Athletic Conference play after posting an 8-8 record in conference action.  Lost in the first round of the conference tournament to Xavier University. 
 

2001-02

Finished the season with a 18-15 overall record.  Finished in fifth place in Gulf Coast Athletic Conference play after posting an 8-8 record in conference action.  Lost in the first round of the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference Tournament to Dillard University. 
 

2000-01

Finished the season with a 15-15 overall record.  Finished the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference regular season with a 7-9 conference record. Lost in the first round of the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference Tournament to William Carey College. 
 

1999-00

Joe Niland named as the new head coach.  Finished the season with a 24-10 overall record.  Finished the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference season with a 15-3 conference record. Ranked as high as 4th in the NAIA National Poll.  Lost in the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference Championship Game to Southern University-New Orleans.  Lost in the first round of the NAIA National Tournament to Lindsey Wilson College.
 

1998-99

Finished the season with a 34-6 overall record.  Won the regular season Gulf Coast Athletic Conference Championship with a 16-2 mark in conference action.  Lost in the Championship Game of the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference Tournament to Spring Hill College.  Lost in the NAIA National Tournament Championship Game to Life University.
 

1997-98

Finished the season with a 27-9 overall record.  Finished as regular season Co-Champions of the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference with a 15-3 record in conference action.  Advanced to the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference Tournament Championship game before losing to Southern University New Orleans.  Lost in the first round of the NAIA National Tournament to Transylvania.  Scott Sanderson named GCAC Coach of the Year.
 

1996-97

Scott Sanderson named head coach.  Finished the season with a 23-10 overall record.  Finished in second place in the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference with a 12-6 record in conference action.  Lost in the first round of the conference tournament to William Carey College.
 

1995-96

Finished the season with a 21-12 overall record. Finished in seventh place in the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference after posting a 9-9 record in GCAC action.  Lost in the first round of the conference tournament to Spring Hill.
 

1994-95

Finished the season with a 21-13 overall record.  Finished in sixth place in the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference after posting a 7-9 record in conference action.  Won the University of Mobile Tip-Off Tournament, Embry-Riddle University Invitational Tournament and the University of Mobile Gulf Coast Classic.  Lost in the semi-finals of the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference Tournament to Dillard University.  Head Coach Dr. Bill Elder elected to the NAIA Basketball Coaches Hall of Fame. Chad Applin and Adam Thomas named to the All-GCAC Team.
 

1993-94

Finished the season with a 32-3 overall record.  Gulf Coast Athletic Conference regular season champions.  Became the first team in Gulf Coast Athletic Conference history to go undefeated (16-0) in conference action.  Finished the regular season with the best regular season record (31-1) and the nation's longest winning streak (26).  Ranked third in the final NAIA National regular season poll.  Lost in the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference Tournament to Spring Hill College.  Lost in the first round of the NAIA National Tournament to Midwestern State.  Eric Polite and Dennis Powell named NAIA Honorable Mention All-American Players. Coach Bill Elder named Gulf Coast Athletic Conference Coach of the Year.
 

1992-93

Finished the season with a 23-11 overall record.  Finished in fourth place in the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference after posting an 8-8 record in conference action.  Lost to Spring Hill College in round two of the District 30 Tournament.  Dennis Powell named to the Gulf Coast Athletic All-Conference Team and the NAIA All-District 30 Team.
 

1991-92

Finished the season with a 22-11 overall record.  Finished third in the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference after posting a 10-6 record in conference action.  Lost to Xavier University in the second round of the District 30 Tournament.  Kyle Cox named a NAIA Academic AA.
 

1990-91

Finished the season with a 15-17 overall record.  Finished in second place in the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference after posting a 10-6 record in conference action.  Lost in the first round of the District 30 Tournament to Dillard University.
 

1989-90

Finished the season with a 21-12 overall record.  Finished second in the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference after posting an 11-5 record in conference action.  Lost in the first round of the District 30 Tournament to Dillard University.
 

1988-89

Finished the season with a 28-7 overall record.  Won the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference regular season championship by posting a 13-3 record in conference action.  Ranked 15th in the nation in the final NAIA poll.  Lost in the first round of the District 30 Tournament to William Carey College.  Anderson Lignon named as a NAIA All-American Honorable Mention.
 

1987-88

Finished the season with a 31-3 overall record.  Won the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference regular season championship by posting a near perfect 15-1 record in conference action.  Ranked 12th in the nation in the final NAIA poll. Defeated Louisiana College 61-60 to win the District 30 Tournament.  Lost to Dordt College in the first round of the NAIA National Tournament.  Dr. Bill Elder named Gulf Coast Athletic Conference and District 30 Coach of the Year.
 

1986-87

Dr. Bill Elder named the first head coach of the University of Mobile men's basketball program.  Finished the season with a 18-14 overall record.  Finished third in the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference after posting a 9-7 record in conference action.  Lost to Xavier University in the first round of the District 30 Tournament.
