Men's Tennis History

OVERALL PROGRAM RECORD: 192-107-14

2025: 

Finished the season 7-8 while falling out of the first round in the SSAC Mens Tennis Tournament. 

Martin Jeanne won a position as a First Team All-conference while Sergio Ruiz Ramiro won Second Team All-conference. Santiago Reina was an SSAC Scholar Athlete and Sergio Ruiz Ramiro won Scholar Athlete of the Year for the SSAC. 

13 players landed on the all Academic Team. 


2024:

Finished the season with the third-best winning percentage in University of Mobile Men's Tennis history at 18-4 overall. Went 7-0 at home and eventually fell in the semifinals of the SSAC Men's Tennis Championship Tournament to No. 8 Middle Georgia State. At the NAIA Men's Tennis National Championship Tournament, the Rams were eliminated in the second round by eventual national champions Georgia Gwinnett College. Mobile knocked off College of Coastal Georgia in the first round of nationals.

Joao Pedro Okano and Martine Jeanne were both named SSAC First-Team All-Conference selections, with Okano being named an NAIA First-Team All-American, the first since 1998. Okano earned All-America honors in the NAIA in each of his three seasons at the University of Mobile. 

Four members earned Daktronics NAIA Scholar-Athlete recognition, with nine being named to the SSAC Men's Tennis All-Academic Team. Joao Okano earned a spot on the SSAC Barnes & Noble College Scholar-Athlete Team for the third-straight year and was named the SSAC Men's Tennis Scholar-Athlete of the Year. 

2023:

Finished the season with a 9-7 overall record, beginning the season inside the NAIA Men's Tennis Top 25. Fell in the opening round of the 2023 NAIA Men's Tennis National Championship Tournament to the University of the Cumberlands.

Joao Pedro Okano was named the SSAC Men's Tennis Player of the Year and earned NAIA All-America Honorable Mention honors.

2022:

UM Men's and Women's Tennis both finished the 2022 season ranked in the NAIA Tennis Top 25 polls and competed in the NAIA Tennis National Championships at the Mobile Tennis Center.

On the men's side, Joao Pedro Okano and Boris Klingebiel were named NAIA Men's Tennis All-America Honorable Mention as well as being named to the SSAC Men's Tennis First-Team All-Conference Team, where they were joined by teammate Sergio Ramiro Ruiz. Additionally, Okano was named the conference's newcomer of the year following his first season with Mobile.

On the women's team, Maria Jose Reynaldo Toledo and Sofija Hrovat were named to the SSAC Women's Tennis First-Team All-Conference Team. Both Toledo and Hrovat, as well as eight teammates, were later named to the SSAC Women's Tennis All-Academic Team.


2021:

Finished 9-6 overall and 1-4 in SSAC action. Defeated William Woods University in the first round of the NAIA Men's Tennis National Championship Tournament. Fell to Keiser University in the second round of NAIA Nationals.

Boris Klingebiel and Matias Le Fort earned SSAC First-Team All-Conference selections. Kevin Andrusch and Andres Graterol were selected to the SSAC Second-Team All-Conference team.

2020:

Due to the COVID-19 (Coronavirus) pandemic across the nation, the 2020 Tennis season was cut short. Rams had a record of 4-1 and were ranked No. 12 in the NAIA before the remainder of the season was cancelled. 

Artem Vasheshnikov, Guido Evangelista, and Hugh Mitchell were all named to the SSAC All-Academic Team for 2020.

2019:

Finished 14-6 overall and 5-3 in SSAC play. Finished season ranked No. 14 in the NAIA. Rams fell to Cardinal Stritch University in the second round of the NAIA National Championship Tournament. 

Mark Simons,  Boris Klingebiel, and Luca Cirenza were selected to the SSAC All-Conference Team. Simons was named to the NAIA All-American Second Team for the second straight year. Klingebiel was named as a NAIA All-American Honorable Mention. 

2018:

Rams finished 19-3 overall and 8-1 in SSAC action. Finished the season ranked as the No. 11 team in the NAIA. Mobile took home the SSAC Regular-Season Championship and fell to William Carey University in the SSAC Championship Tournament Final. Rams lost to Campbellsville University in the Opening Round of the NAIA National Championship Tournament.

Mobile Head Coach Uwe Tittl was named SSAC Coach of the Year. Illya Filanchuk was named SSAC Newcomer of the Year and Boris Klingebiel was named SSAC Freshman of the Year. Both Filanchuk and Klingebiel along with Mark Simons, Tim Buehler, and Jonah Jacubec were all selected to the SSAC All-Conference Team. 

Mark Simons was selected to the NAIA All-American Second Team. Tim Buehler was named a NAIA All-American Honorable Mention.

2017:

Finished the season ranked No. 11 in the NAIA with a overall record of 21-4 and SSAC record of 7-1. Rams fell to Lindsey Wilson College in the second round of the NAIA National Championship Tournament.

Mark Simons, Nick Van Amerom, and Tim Buehler were all named to the SSAC All-Conference Team. Simons was later named to the NAIA All-American Honorable Mention Team.

2016:

Finished 11-8 overall and 5-4 in SSAC play. Earned host bid to the NAIA National Tournament and lost 5-3 to No. 16 Olivet Nazarene. Ended the year ranked 19th in the NAIA. Tim Buehler named 1st-Team All-Conference and Mark Simons named All-Freshman. Four named Daktronics-NAIA Scholar-Athletes. Marcio Dal Pont and Buehler named CoSIDA Academic All-District.
 

2015:

Finished 9-10 overall and 2-7 in conference. Earned host bid to the NAIA National Tournament and lost 7-2 to Concordia-Irvine. Santiago Casucci named All-Conference and Capital One Academic All-District. Five named Daktronics-NAIA Scholar-Athletes.  


2014:

Finished 10-8 overall and 4-6 in conference. Earned host bid to the NAIA National Tournament and finished season ranked No. 22 in NAIA Top-25. Marcio Dal Pont named Honorable Mention NAIA All-American and All-Conference. Karlis Stonis and Dal Pont named Daktronics-NAIA Scholar-Athletes. DAl Pont, Stonis and Santiago Quiros named CoSIDA Capital One Academic All-District.

 

2013:

Finished 9-5 overall and 2-2 in conference. Earned host bid to the NAIA National Championship. Karlis Stonis named 2nd-Team All-SSAC. Fernando Paiva and Stonis named Capital One Academic All-District. Paiva named Daktronics-NAIA Scholar-Athlete.
 

2012:

Finished 7-6 overall and 2-2 in conference. Earned host bid to the NAIA National Championship. Fernando Paiva named SSAC Newcomer of the Year.
 

2011:

Finished 6-8 overall and 2-2 in conference. Earned host bid to the NAIA National Championship.


2010:

Men's Tennis: Finished 10-6 and 6-4. Earned host bid to the NAIA National Tournament and fell in the 1st-Round 0-6 to Point Loma Nazarene. Jesus Urmeneta named Daktronics-NAIA Scholar Athlete.

2009:

Finished the season 10-5 overall and 6-2 in GCAC play. Finished as runner-ups in the GCAC Tournament and earned the host bid to the NAIA National Tournament. Fell to Point Loma Nazarene in the first round at nationals. Ale Vial was named 1st-Team All-GCAC and Daktronics NAIA-Scholar Athlete. Sam Perlmutter was also named Daktronics NAIA-Scholar Athlete.
 

2008:

Finished the season 9-7 in the first year of reinstatement. Uwe Tittl named the Men's Tennis Coach. Made a National Tennis Tournament appearance. Ale Vial was named GCAC Player of the Year.

1998:

Gulf Coast Athletic Conference Champions.

1997:

NAIA NATIONAL CHAMPIONS: Finished the season 27-2 and won the program's second NAIA National Championship! Rams grabbed 33 points compared to 26 for AUM. Derrick Racine Coach of the Year. Fernando Ibarrola named Ward-Ballinger Outstanding Player. Gulf Coast Athletic Conference Champions.

1996:

Finished the season 23-3 and was the runner-up at the NAIA National Tournament. Gulf Coast Athletic Conference Champions.

1995:

Finished the season with a 23-0 record. For the second-straight year finished 3rd at the NAIA National Tennis Tournament. Gulf Coast Athletic Conference Champions.

1994:

Finished the season with a 18-5 record. Finished in 3rd place at the NAIA National Tennis Tournament. Gulf Coast Athletic Conference Champions.

1993:

NAIA NATIONAL CHAMPIONS: Finished the season with a 22-3 record and won the NAIA National Championship! Rams finished with 28 points to beat out AUM and North Florida; Mattias Karlsson and Jacques Theron won doubles championship 6-2, 4-6, 6-2. Jim Moortgat named Coach of the Year. Rams beat NCAA D-I Ole Miss during the 93' season. Gulf Coast Athletic Conference Champions.

1992:

Jim Moortgat named new head coach.  Improved season record to 22-8. Finished in 6th place at the NAIA National Tennis Tournament. Gulf Coast Athletic Conference Champions.

1991:

Finished the season with a 14-11 record.

1990:

Mike Avery named new head coach.  Finished the season with a 15-13 record.

1989:

Finished the season with an 8-13 record.

1988:

Finished the season with a 12-11 record. Made the team's first appearance at the NAIA National Tournament and finished 24th.

1987:

Went 16-7 in the program's second year of competition.

1986:

Phil Erdman takes over as the first men's tennis coach in school history.  Finished the season with a 12-12 overall record.
