DALTON, Ga. - The University of Mobile Women's Soccer team traveled to Dalton, Ga. for the opening round of the SSAC Women's Soccer Championship Tournament on Wednesday, Nov. 3. Due to Mobile earning the No. 5 seed in the tournament, the Rams battled No. 4 seed Dalton State Roadrunners on their home field on Wednesday evening. The two teams met earlier in the season with Dalton State defeating Mobile, 4-0.
On Wednesday, the result was a different story as the Rams managed to defeat Dalton State 2-1 and advance to the semifinals of the single-elimination conference tournament in Montgomery, Ala. With the win on Wednesday, Mobile's overall record improves to 4-11-2. After a tough beginning of the season, the Rams have now won or tied in four of their last five matches.
In the victory, Sophie Walsh scored Mobile's first goal of the match, her third on the year. Walsh's goal was scored in the 38th minute and was assisted by Anakah Madril. The Rams took a 1-0 lead to halftime.
In the second half, Mobile managed to score an insurance goal in the 69th minute to go up two goals over the Roadrunners. Maria Eduarda Rocha Bento also scored her third goal of the season in her first year as a Ram. In the 88th minute, Dalton State managed to hit the scoreboard to cut the deficit in half, but time ran out as Mobile took the win to advance in the tournament.
Mobile Head Coach Brian Person and his team will travel to Montgomery, Ala. for the semifinals of the conference tournament on Wednesday, Nov. 10. The Rams will battle the No. 1 seed of the tournament as well as the No. 1 team in the nation, William Carey, at 1:00 p.m. CT at the Emory Folmar YMCA Soccer Complex in Montgomery.
