Box Score 4 LAKE WALES, Fla. - It was an impressive weekend for the University of Mobile Volleyball program as the Rams opened the 2021 season with four wins and zero losses against four different non-conference opponents on Friday and Saturday, Aug. 20-21.
Mobile, led by 17th-year Head Coach Jon Campbell, hit the road to open the 2021 season in the Royals Classic Volleyball Tournament hosted by Warner University in Lake Wales, Fla. The Rams opened up the tournament on Friday with an early morning match against Truett McConnell University. Mobile swept Truett McConnell in straight sets, 25-20, 25-7, 25-11 for their first win of the season. The Rams were later scheduled to face St. Andrews University later that afternoon.
In the Friday afternoon match against St. Andrews, Mobile again swept their competition in straight sets, 25-14, 25-15, 25-15 and finished the first day of the season oozing confidence going into the final day of the tournament on Saturday.
Mobile was again scheduled for a morning match the following day, this time against Grace College, and went to battle with the Lancers. Grace managed to take the first set of the match, 26-24. However, Mobile answered back by winning the next two sets, 28-26 and 25-17. Facing a loss, the Lancers came back strong in the fourth set and defeated the Rams, 25-15 to force a fifth set. In the fifth and final set to determine a winner, Grace held the lead for much of the set, but Mobile stormed back late and won the set, 18-16, and gave the Rams the match victory. The Rams celebrated big in the locker room following the great win over the Lancers.
With a 3-0 record in the tournament, Mobile then set their sights on Warner University that same evening who was playing with home-court advantage. Warner managed to win the first set, but the Rams took the next three sets over the Royals to stay perfect in the tournament and start the 2021 season undefeated at 4-0.
On the weekend, Mobile was led offensively by Abby Andrews, who recorded 59 total kills on the weekend while recording a .281 hitting percentage. Senior setter Sarah Warren led the team with 89 assists on the weekend and Melea Meadows led Mobile defensively with 78 digs.
Mobile will compete in another four-match tournament next weekend in the Faulkner University Volleyball Tournament beginning on Aug. 27. The Rams will take on Freed-Hardeman University at 3:00 p.m. CT on the 27th to start their tournament schedule.
