Mobile Back to .500 with Home Win Over Talladega College

Rams Sweep Tornadoes During Regular Season

H. AUSTILL PHARR GYMNASIUM, MOBILE, Ala. - The University of Mobile Women's Basketball team returned to the win column on Tuesday evening, Jan. 24, defeating conference foe Talladega College at home, 65-60. Mobile is coming off a 1-1 week in conference play, falling in the last game played prior to Tuesday on the road at Brewton-Parker. Tuesday's win over the Tornadoes of Talladega College put the Rams back at .500 on the season with an 11-11 overall record, while also improving the SSAC record to 7-5 on the year. Additionally, the win over Talladega College on Tuesday gives Mobile a regular season sweep at 2-0 over the Tornadoes.

Consistency Pays Off

Tuesday's score between Mobile and Talladega stayed close throughout the majority of the game, with Mobile coming out on top in three of the four quarters played. The Rams had a 16-14 advantage following the first quarter, while outscoring Talladega 14-9 in the second. The Rams went to halftime leading, 30-23. In the third quarter, the Mobile defense held the Tornadoes to just 12 points, with the offense coming away with 18. Mobile began running away with the game until Talladega put together the best offensive quarter of the game in the fourth.

In the fourth quarter, Talladega trailed Mobile by 17 points with just under eight minutes remaining in the game, but began cutting into the deficit, eventually scoring 25 points alone in the final 10 minutes. However, Mobile's consistent offense on the night scored 17 points in the fourth, which eventually gave the Rams a five-point victory as Talladega's comeback fell short.

Throughout all four quarters, Mobile scored at least 14 points in each quarter and shot just under 40% from the field as a team. The Rams finished 18-for-25 at the free throw line, good for a 72% free throw mark. Talladega managed to out-rebound Mobile 32-30, but committed 14 turnovers that led to 15 Mobile points. Mobile only committed 11 turnovers in the game and came away with seven steals.

Erica Jones led the Rams in scoring on Tuesday, finishing with 18 points. She added six rebounds, four of which were offensive boards. MacKenzie White also mixed in six rebounds, tallying 12 points in the process. White filled out that stat sheet by adding four assists, one block, and a team-high three steals in the win. Both Jones and White finished four rebounds shy of a double-double.

Tough Test Up Next

Mobile is set to face Loyola University (La.) next on the schedule, a 12:00 p.m. CT game in New Orleans, La on Saturday, Jan. 28. Loyola is currently ranked No. 10 in the latest NAIA Women's Basketball Top 25 Coaches' Poll with a 17-1 record, and defeated Mobile earlier in the season in Pharr Gymnasium, 69-47. The Rams will look for an upset victory on the road this weekend.
