NEW ORLEANS, La. - The University of Mobile Women's Basketball team fell to the 10th-ranked Loyola University Wolf Pack 67-55 in a road conference game on Saturday afternoon, Jan. 28, falling back under .500 at 11-12 overall on the year and 7-6 in SSAC action. The win for Loyola gives the Wolf Pack a 2-0 record over the Rams during the 2022-23 regular season, with Mobile falling 69-47 at home earlier in the season on Dec. 3.
Rough Second Quarter Haunts MobileÂ
Both teams began Saturday afternoon with high-scoring performances in the first quarter, with Loyola outscoring the Rams 24-20 after the first 10 minutes. In the second quarter, Mobile's offense became non-existent as the Rams finished the first half with just four second quarter points. Meanwhile, the Wolf Pack totaled 15 points in the second, eventually leading Mobile at the half, 39-24.
In the second half, Mobile's offense bounced back with 17 points in the third quarter, two points better than Loyola in the third. Mobile also managed to outscore Loyola in the fourth quarter 14-13, but the second quarter struggles came back to haunt Mobile in the end as the Wolf Pack came away with the 12-point win.Â
Cosette Balmy finished the game with a team-high 13 points in the defeat, securing six rebounds, five assists, and a team-high three steals in the process. Erica Jones followed Balmy's performance with 12 points, while grabbing seven rebounds. Jones shared the team-lead with Claire Worth with seven boards each, while Balmy led Mobile with Worth with five assists a piece. Worth notched seven points on Saturday.
As a team, Mobile shot just 35% from the floor, making 22 shots in the game. The Rams finished 7-for-15 at the free throw line and made four of 19 three-point attempts. Both teams finished with 41 rebounds each, while Mobile turned the ball over 16 times. Loyola committed 13 turnovers on Saturday afternoon.
More Tuesday Action in the Pharr
For the second-straight week, Mobile is set to play a Tuesday afternoon conference game in Pharr Gymnasium for the next game on the schedule, with Mobile hosting Stillman College on Tuesday, Jan. 31 at 5:30 p.m. CT.Â
The Rams will look for revenge over Stillman as Mobile suffered the worst loss of the season at the hands of the Tigers earlier in the year.
