H. AUSTILL PHARR GYMNASIUM, MOBILE, Ala. - After a tough 26-point loss to Stillman College on the road earlier in the season, the University of Mobile Women's Basketball team managed to get revenge over the Tigers of Stillman with a 49-40 home victory on Tuesday evening, Jan. 31. The victory for the Rams brings the overall record back to .500 on the year at 12-12, with the current conference record advancing to 8-6. At home in Pharr Gymnasium, Mobile has put together an 8-2 record during the 2022-23 season.
Mobile Controls Stillman in Second Half
In the low-scoring matchup between Stillman and Mobile on Tuesday, both teams concluded the first quarter with 16-combined points in the first 10 minutes of the game, with the Tigers having the edge, 11-5. However, Mobile's offense sprung back to life in the second quarter, scoring 15 total points, while holding Stillman to just 12. From there, Stillman took a three-point lead to halftime.
In the second half, Mobile's defense was on display, holding the Stillman offense to single digits in each of the final two quarters of the game. Meanwhile, the Rams scored 12 points in the third quarter and a game-high 17 points in the final 10 minutes. The Tigers offense only mustered nine points in the third and just eight points in the fourth. The shutdown second half for Mobile gave the Rams the nine-point win in front of the home faithful.
As a team, Mobile shot just under 40% from the floor in Tuesday's victory despite a 2-for-14 start in the first quarter. In the final three quarters, the Rams shot above 40% in each quarter, including shooting above 54% in the second and fourth quarters alone. Meanwhile, Stillman's offense struggled despite holding a lead at the half. The Tigers only shot 29% in the defeat, committing 20 turnovers in the process. The Stillman giveaways eventually led to 13 points for the Rams.
Erica Jones, Mobile's team leader in scoring this season, led all players on the court on Tuesday with 15 points. Jones finished with eight rebounds, two shy of a double-double, and was responsible for two of Mobile's made three-point shots in the win. Behind Jones, three Rams finished with eight points each. Cosette Balmy, MacKenzie White, and Miya Kimber all tallied eight points in the victory, with White making Mobile's other three-pointer and leading the Rams with two steals and five assists. For Balmy, the Martinique, France native finished second on the team with seven rebounds, while Kimber tallied four boards.
On the Road for Two
Tuesday's win for Mobile is a good sendoff as the Rams hit the road for two-straight conference games beginning this upcoming weekend. Mobile is set to face Faulkner University on Saturday afternoon, Feb. 4 at 12:00 p.m. CT in Montgomery, Ala., and will follow that game with a 5:30 p.m. CT game against conference rival William Carey on Feb. 7 in Hattiesburg, Miss.
This season, Mobile is 1-1 against Faulkner and William Carey, defeating WCU at home and falling to Faulkner at home by just three points.
