UM Volleyball Concludes Regular Season with 1-1 Weekend; Set for SSAC Volleyball Championship Tournament This Week

Rams Wrap Up Regular Season Schedule at Home; Earn No. 5 Seed in Upcoming Conference Tournament

AUSTILL PHARR GYMNASIUM | MOBILE, Ala. - The University of Mobile Volleyball team saw the regular season portion of the 2023 schedule close over the weekend, hosting two conference matches at home in the process. Mobile began the weekend on Friday night, Nov. 3 by defeating the University of Tennessee Southern in straight sets, but fell via the sweep to Blue Mountain Christian (Miss.) the following afternoon to end the regular season.

Mobile's overall record sits at 17-9 entering postseason play, while recording a 9-6 SSAC record. With the 9-6 record in the conference, Mobile secured the No. 5 seed in the upcoming 2023 SSAC Volleyball Championship Tournament, scheduled to begin later this week in Montgomery, Ala.

Friday Recap: Mobile 3, UT-Southern 0

The weekend began with a solid 25-22, 25-16, 25-17 victory for Mobile over the Firehawks of UT-Southern. The Rams finished with a .257 team hitting percentage in the win, hitting around .300 in each of the first two sets played. In 101 team attack attempts, Mobile finished with 41 kills and just 15 attack errors. Meanwhile, UT-Southern failed to hit above .200 in any set on Friday night, finishing the night with just 27 total kills and a hitting percentage at .132.

Corrina Porch-Maxey led the Rams individually on the offensive side, totaling 13 kills and a .435 hitting percentage. Layton Adams and Jordan Wood followed Porch-Maxey's offensive production with seven kills each, while Adams hit .429 and Wood hit .400. For Adams, the junior added 14 assists and eight digs against the Firehawks. 

Tatum Beech led the Rams with 22 assists in the sweep, the second-highest total this year for the junior setter. She added six digs and two service aces. Lexi Gillette eventually finished as the only player on the court for Mobile to record double-digit dig totals, finishing with 14 in the win.

Saturday Recap: Mobile 0, Blue Mountain 3

In a tough matchup against Blue Mountain Christian to conclude the regular season, Mobile fell, 21-25, 14-25, 18-25. The Toppers finished the regular season with a 21-1 overall record, going undefeated in conference play and finishing with a 19-match winning streak.

Before Saturday's match began, five graduating seniors from the University of Mobile Volleyball program were honored for Senior Day. Seniors honored were the following: Elizabeth Bedford, Brinkley Hearn, Amy Jernigan, Aleah Kennedy, and Jordan Wood. Each were presented with a framed jersey and flowers by Mobile coaches, Jon Campbell and Amber Campbell.

In Saturday's match, it was a match to forget for Mobile as the team struggled on the offensive side. The Rams only hit .017, committing 26 attack errors on 118 total attacks. Mobile finished Saturday with 28 total kills. For Blue Mountain, the Toppers finished with a .241 hitting line, recording 37 kills.

Layton Adams led the Rams with nine kills, while Tatum Beech tallied a team-high 13 assists and Lexi Gillette led Mobile with 16 digs. 

SSAC Volleyball Championship Tournament

Out of eight competing teams, Mobile earned the No. 5 seed in the upcoming conference tournament, placing the Rams in Pool A with the No. 1, 4, 5, and 8 seeds. Pool A consists of top seed Blue Mountain, Point (Ga.) who jumped Mobile on the final day for the fourth seed, and the eighth-seeded team of Faulkner (Ala.).

Mobile opens the conference tournament on Thursday, Nov. 9 with a morning matchup against Blue Mountain at 9:00 a.m. CT, with an afternoon match against Faulkner scheduled for 2:00 p.m. CT. For more information on the SSAC Volleyball Championship Tournament, click HERE.
