UM Volleyball Opens Conference Tournament with 1-1 Day; Will Play for Spot in Semifinals on Friday

Rams Looking to Make it Back to Conference Championship Match on Friday

MULTIPLEX AT CRAMTON BOWL | MONTGOMERY, Ala. - The University of Mobile Volleyball team began the 2023 postseason on Thursday, Nov. 9 in the Montgomery, Ala., playing two matches in the 2023 SSAC Volleyball Championship Tournament. Mobile, the No. 5 seed in this year's tournament, began play against the top-seeded Toppers of Blue Mountain Christian (Miss.) to start the day, eventually falling in straight sets as Blue Mountain extends the current winning streak to 20-straight matches. Later that afternoon, the Rams bounced back with a sweep of their own against Faulkner University (Ala.), the eighth seed of the conference tourney.

The 1-1 day moves the overall record this season to 18-10, with Mobile set to play one more match in pool play for a spot in the semifinals on Friday, Nov. 10.

Day One Results / Highlights
  • Mobile fell 25-12, 25-15, 25-19 to Blue Mountain on Thursday morning, but managed a 25-20, 25-13, 25-20 victory over Faulkner later that afternoon.
  • Corrina Porch-Maxey led the charge for Mobile with 25 total kills across the two matches played, tallying 16 kills alone off a .467 attack percentage against Faulkner.
  • Aspen Adams joined Porch-Maxey in producing offensively, coming away with 13 total kills across both matches, adding 16 defensive digs.
  • Layton Adams led Mobile with 23 total digs on Thursday, followed by Mobile libero Lexi Gillette with 21.
  • L. Adams added 27 assists, while Tatum Beech paced Mobile with 36 assists in the Rams' 6-2 ran offense. 
  • As a team, Mobile hit .055 against the Toppers of Blue Mountain, while recording a .330 attack percentage against the Eagles.
  • Mobile totaled 89 kills on 201 attacks on Thursday.

Spot in Semis on the Line

Mobile is set to conclude pool play on Friday afternoon at 1:30 p.m. CT as the Rams face Point University (Ga.) for a potential spot in this year's semifinals. Point jumped Mobile in the standings on the final day of the regular season to secure the No. 4 seed.

All matches of this year's conference tournament will be played at the Multiplex at Cramton Bowl in downtown Montgomery, Ala., and will be broadcasted live HERE.
