Weekend Road Game Slips Away from UM Women's Basketball

Mobile's Offense Sputters Against Point on Saturday

WEST POINT, Ga. - The University of Mobile Women's Basketball team dropped the first conference game of the 2023-24 season over the weekend, falling to Point University (Ga.) 61-51 on Saturday afternoon, Dec. 2. The loss for the Rams is just the second defeat of the season as the overall record falls to 8-2, while moving the SSAC record to 3-1 this year. Additionally, the road loss on Saturday snaps a four-game winning streak that Mobile had put together.

Game Recap

Entering Saturday's game, Mobile averaged over 80 points per contest as a team, shooting over 40% from the floor. However, the Rams struggled to find consistent offense against the Skyhawks, tallying just 24 points in the first half off a sub-30% shooting line. Meanwhile, Point finished the first half with 28 points and shot just under 40%, making 11 shots from the floor with three three-pointers.

In the second half, Mobile's offense continued its struggles, making just two of 17 total shot attempts in the third quarter. The Rams were outscored 20-8 in the third quarter alone as Point took a 48-32 lead to the fourth. Mobile's offense then picked up in the fourth quarter, with the Rams scoring 19 points off an 8-for-20 shooting line. However, the rough third quarter proved to be the difference in the end as Mobile allowed 13 points for the Skyhawks in the fourth and eventually fell by 10 points.

In total, Mobile made 20 of 73 shots in the loss, good for a 27.4 shooting percentage. Point shot 39% in the upset win over Mobile, improving to 4-4 overall on the season. Additionally, the Skyhawks managed to out-rebound the Rams 51-37, adding eight steals and six blocks. For Mobile, the Rams were led by Alanna Donaldson with a game-high 21 points, who averaged 22 points in two games on the week. Donaldson added three rebounds and two steals in the loss and is averaging over 15 points per game in her first year as a Ram.

Back Home in the Pharr

Mobile is scheduled to return to action on Saturday afternoon, Dec. 9, hosting Dillard University (La.) for a non-conference meeting at 12:00 p.m. CT. Saturday's game is the 60th meeting all time between Mobile and Dillard, with Mobile winning five of the last six matchups.
