MONTGOMERY, Ala. - The University of Mobile Women's Basketball team almost came away with an upset win over Faulkner University on Saturday afternoon, Feb. 4, falling in overtime to the Eagles, 80-77. Faulkner managed a late comeback in the fourth quarter to force overtime and eventually defeated the Rams by three. With the Saturday loss on the road, Mobile falls back below .500 on the season at 12-13 overall.
Mobile Runs Out of Time in OT
After a big offensive first half for both teams that saw Mobile lead 34-33 at the break, the Rams continued their strong offense in the third quarter with 20 total points. Leading by three entering the final 10 minutes, Faulkner kept the Mobile lead manageable and eventually tied the game at 69 points a piece with just 19 seconds remaining in the game. From there, the two teams played an extra five-minute period in what was Mobile's first overtime game of the season.
In overtime, Faulkner's fourth-quarter comeback allowed the Eagles to gain momentum, eventually outscoring Mobile in overtime 11-8 to win the game, 80-77. Across all five periods on Saturday, Mobile's offense shot 42% from the floor, while tallying 13 of 16 free throw attempts. Mobile made a season-high eight three-pointers in the loss, four coming from Mary Denman Luker who matched a season-high with 18 points in 27 minutes of playing time from off the bench.
Miya Kimber led Mobile in scoring on Saturday, tallying a career-high 22 points, while adding three rebounds. Erica Jones followed Kimber and Denman Luker with 12 points, while Cosette Balmy finished the afternoon with 10 points. Balmy finished two rebounds shy of a double-double.Â
Rival Game On Tap
Next week, the Rams are set to return to action with a road rivalry game against the William Carey Crusaders on Tuesday, Feb. 7. Tuesday's meeting between Mobile and William Carey is the second and final meeting during the regular season between the two rivals, with Mobile winning the first matchup by three points at home earlier in the year.Â
Tuesday's game is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. CT in Hattiesburg, Miss.Â
