Men's Tennis Continues Undefeated Start to 2024 Season

Rams Shut Out the Wildcats of Bethel on Wednesday Afternoon

GERALD WALLACE TENNIS CENTER | MOBILE, Ala. - The University of Mobile Men's Tennis team continued the strong start to the 2024 season on Wednesday, Mar. 6, shutting out Bethel University (Tenn.) 7-0 to improve to 8-0 on the year. The win comes just two days after the Rams hosted and defeated No. 15 Dillard University (La.) 4-3 at home as Mobile continues to make a push to be ranked inside the NAIA Top 25. 

How It Happened

Mobile cruised through doubles action to begin the match with the doubles point, seeing the top seed and third seed earn 6-3 victories. Joao Pedro Okano and Alex Verdu won as Mobile's top doubles seed, while Callum Dickson and William Crowe earned the win from No. 3 doubles. Bethel managed a 7-6 (0) win from the second-seeded doubles match.

Later in singles play, Joao Pedro Okano continued to roll with a 6-1, 6-2 win in the top singles match on Wednesday, being followed by Martin Jeanne from No. 2 singles with a 6-0, 6-1 win. Overall, Mobile dominated singles play, never losing a set as a team to the Wildcats across all six singles matches played.

Callum Dickson earned a hard-fought 7-5, 6-4 victory from No. 3 singles, while Alex Verdu won 6-3, 6-3 from the fourth flight in the lineup. Rounding out the singles matches, William Crowe recorded a 6-1, 6-2 victory as the No. 5 seed and Sergio Ruiz Ramiro notched a 6-1, 6-0 win from No. 6 singles. 

As a team, the Rams saw just one loss total on the day to Bethel, with the 7-6 win in doubles play for the Wildcats not reflecting on the overall score.

Doubleheader Upcoming

After a strong 2-0 week at home, Mobile will be back in action on the home courts of the Gerald Wallace Tennis Center on Tuesday, Mar. 12, hosting Doane University (Neb.) for a doubleheader. Match one next Tuesday is slated for an 11:00 a.m. CT start, while match two is scheduled to begin at 2:00 p.m. CT.
