MONTGOMERY, Ala. - In a tightly contested conference showdown on Saturday, Jan. 4, the University of Mobile's Men's Basketball team mounted an impressive second-half rally against Faulkner University (Ala.) but ultimately fell short in the SSAC Men's Basketball Game of the Week, losing 77-74 to the Eagles.
Mobile's overall record falls to 9-4 following the three-point loss, while the SSAC record drops to 3-2.
How It Happened
The Rams trailed by 14 points midway through the second half on Saturday, putting together a late comeback across the final 10 minutes of regulation. With just under two minutes remaining, Mobile tied the game, 73-73. However, a successful jumper and a pair of late free throws handed Faulkner the lead and eventually the win.
Mobile was led by BJ Comer's season-high 24 points on 9-of-15 shooting, including a clutch 15-point surge in the second half. Comer has managed 23-point and 24-point performances in each of his last two games played. Meanwhile, Treylan Smith added 19 points against the Eagles, while hitting five three-pointers and grabbing eight rebounds.
Ezra McKenna recorded his ninth double-double of the year with 11 points and 11 boards. Despite Mobile's impressive offensive efficiency, shooting 52% from the field and an outstanding 60% from beyond the arc, turnovers proved costly with the Rams committing 19 turnovers, leading to 19 points for Faulkner.
What's Ahead
Mobile is set to meet Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College (Ga.) next time out, scheduled for Thursday, Jan. 9 at 6:30 p.m. CT. ABAC is the SSAC's newest member as Thursday's game will be held in Tifton, Ga.
