Archey Gets Win #100 with Mobile

Rams beat Pensacola Christian College to start season with a win

PHARR GYMNASIUM | MOBILE, Ala. - Fall is in the air, which means Mobile basketball is back! The University of Mobile men's basketball got their 2025-2026 season underway on Saturday afternoon with a 2:00pm CT tip off time. The Rams took on the Eagles of Pensacola Christian College in the season opener with the home side claiming the victory in front of their fans. The win not only served as the first opportunity for fans to see the team, but was a major landmark in the career of Head Coach Darnell Archey as he picked up the 100th win of his tenure at the head of the Mobile program.

The first points of the new season came courtesy of first year Ram, Kristiyan Vasilev who made back to back free throws to start the game. Mobile would go on a good run to start off the half with the Rams leading 22-7 after ten minutes. Despite the Rams sizable early advantage on the scoreboard, the Eagles didn't get discouraged and began to whittle down Mobile's lead to just 4 points with two minutes left. The Rams would give up the lead in the final 30 seconds of the half with Pensacola Christian hitting a three pointer to carry a 35-33 lead over Mobile into halftime. Senior guard Alex Hammond would lead the Rams through the first twenty minutes with 6 points and 8 rebounds with 3 assists to add.

With a lead to take back, Mobile came out of halftime battling back and forth with Pensacola Christian as both sides traded off the lead several times through the first five minutes. The visitors would take the lead back with 14:55 to go and held it all the way until the 1 minute mark as Alex Hammond made a layup in the paint. Immediately following the point, Oliver Boyle would get a steal and Vasilev made the layup to move Mobile's lead up to 3 points. After the Eagles missed a three pointer to tie the scores, Hammond grabbed the rebound and was fouled before making one two free throws to close out the match with three seconds remaining.

Alex Hammond made a big impact in his first game as a Ram as the senior transfer from Loyola University picked up a double-double with 20 points, 15 rebounds and 6 assists. Mason Sword made an impact off the bench with 14 points and 6 rebounds while Aahmod Scarbrough had 10 points and 3 steals in his first appearance for the Rams.
