Rams Go 1-1 During Ken Woods Memorial Classic

Men's Basketball defeats Bryan; loses nailbiter to #25 Keiser

EAGLES' NEST | MARIETTA, Ga. - The 2025 edition of the Ken Woods Memorial Classic basketball tournament took place this weekend in Marietta, Georgia with the Rams going 1-1 in the four team tournament which was hosted by Life University. Mobile face Bryan College on Friday afternoon with a 4:00pm CT tip-off before turning around to face the #25 Seahawks of Keiser University at 11:00am CT on Saturday. The two day tournament gave the Rams an opportunity to test themselves against solid non-conference opposition in a neutral site, which will have served as valuable experience for the squad ahead of a busy season.

Game One Recap | Mobile (78) vs. Bryan College (53):

The Rams kicked off the tournament playing against Bryan College in what was just the second meeting all time between the two sides. The first meeting of these two team occurred way back on January 9th, 1988, in Lake Wales, Florida, with Mobile winning that contest 73-60 against the Lions. Through the opening five minutes, both sides would swap possession of the lead with the Rams eventually opening up a 16-9 lead through the opening ten. During the rest of the first half, Mobile began to open a sizable gap on their opponents, taking a 36-18 lead into the break. Through the first half, Dayton Richardson led all scorers with 10 points off the bench hitting two threes and shooting 66% from the field.

In the second half, Mobile kept up their tempo from the first and would hold their lead for the rest of the game. Alex Hammond made a layup with 17:59 on the clock to extend Mobile's lead to 25 points. A short run for the opposition would then put them just 15 points back of the Rams with 14:03 remaining. Aahmod Scarbrough ended Mobile's 2 minute scoring drought with a three pointer with Zion Hunter following it up with a three pointer of his own. With the game down to the final two minutes and the Rams up by 26, Mobile gave valuable minutes to some of their bench players with Von Carter-Ward making two free throws to close out the scoring.

Alex Hammond registered a double-double in the win with 15 points and 12 rebounds while Zion Hunter went 3-5 from behind the arc and had 13 points with 6 rebounds. The quiet standout from the match however was Freshman Oliver Boyle who was not far off from a triple-double, scoring 12 points with 8 rebounds a 6 assists. Mason Sword was hot off the bench with 18 points shooting 6-10 from the field and 4-5 from three.

Game Two Recap | Mobile (72) vs. #25 Keiser (75):

After picking up the win on day one, Mobile returned to the court with a tough challenge ahead as they faced the Seahawks of Keiser University who were named the #25 team in the NAIA's Preseason Coaches' Top 25 Poll. The Rams would take some time to get things going as Aahmod Scarbrough made a jumper with 16:21 on the clock to put the first points on the board for his side. He would follow that up with a three pointer on the next possession as Mobile would take a 5-4 lead over Keiser. Scarbrough would drain a three pointer and follow that up with a fastbreak dunk to give Mobile a five point lead with 13:32 remaining in the half. Mason Sword became the second Ram to score points, connecting from behind the arc to give Mobile a 13-7 lead. Keiser and Mobile would swap the lead back and forth for the remainder of the half with the opposition making a three pointer with 10 seconds left to leave the Rams down 32-35 at halftime.

The second half saw Keiser hold their lead for the full 20 minutes as Mobile would be down by as much as 11 points during the half. During the final 5 minutes, Mobile slowly began to whittle down Keiser's lead and with 13 second left, Aahmod Scarbrough got the and-1 after making a successful layup. He would hit the ensuing free throw to cut the lead down to 1 point. Alex Hammond committed the foul on the inbound with 5 seconds left and Keiser made both free throws to require Mobile to make the three to tie it up. The Rams got the ball into the hands of Mason Sword who put up a three just as time expired, but it wouldn't fall for him as the Rams suffered their first loss of the season in a close battle against a very good Seahawks side.

Aahmod Scarbrough had a phenomenal game dropping 37 points with 7 rebounds as the senior guard went 15-21 from the field. Mason Sword was the only other Ram to score in the double digits, putting up 10 points with 4 rebounds. Zion Hunter had 5 points, 3 steals, and 3 assists in the loss.

Up Next for the Rams

The Rams will return home for a Monday night contest against the Chargers of Southeastern Baptist at 7:00pm CT in the Pharr Gymnasium.
