Mobile Moves Past Point Into SSAC Tournament Semifinal

Rams dominate in 3-1 opening round victory

THE JUNGLE | MOBILE, Ala. - With the regular season behind them, Mobile Women's Soccer had home field advantage for the Opening Round of the SSAC Conference Tournament where they played hosts to Point University. The Rams faced Point on October 22nd during the run in portion of the regular season in what was a 1-0 loss for Mobile in West Point, Georgia. With hopes of making it far in the postseason, and the opportunity to avenge their loss during the regular season, Mobile took full advantage of their rematch with Point as they faced off in The Jungle on Thursday afternoon.

It wouldn't take long after kickoff for the visitors to register their first opportunity of the match as Point took the first shot of the match in the 3rd minute. Following a Mobile corner kick in the 9th minute, Mobile enjoyed a 10 minute stretch where they completely dominated possession and took 9 shots along with 3 more corner kicks. Elke Fernandez scored the opener during that stretch, beating the keeper in the 18th minute to put her side in the lead. Shortly after the goal, a collision near midfield forced both sides into substitutions, and following a lengthy delay to deal with the injured Point University player, the game was restarted with a Mobile drop ball. Mobile goalkeeper Sarah Polk made several great saves throughout the match including a save to deny Point during a counter attack in the final minute of the first half. The Rams would outshoot the Skyhawks in the first half 12-5 while also managing 8 corner kicks to the opposition's one.

The second half saw the Rams start out hot as Ariana Taylor raced down the right side of the pitch, sending in a cross that Charlotte Malamaire would turn home, just 25 seconds after the restart, to double Mobile's lead. Point pulled one back in the 57th minute with a cross in the box being met by a powerful volleyed effort. The opposition goal wouldn't phase Mobile however as Bailey Bronner struck in an effort off the underside of the crossbar reminiscent of Frank Lampard's ghost goal against Germany in the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa. Bronner's goal was assisted by Malamaire who redirected a cross from Natalie Burt back to the top of the box where Bronner was waiting. The home side kept up the pressure for the remainder of the match as they put up 12 shots in the second half to bring their total to 24 for the match. The 3-1 win propelled the Rams to the Semifinals of the SSAC Conference Tournament which is set to be hosted next week in Montgomery, Alabama.

Up Next for the Rams

Mobile (11-5-1, 6-3-1) moves on to the Semifinals of the SSAC Conference Tournament where they will face William Carey on Thursday, November 6th. The match will be played at the Emory Folmar Sports Complex in Montgomery, Alabama.
