Volleyball Shows Resilience Across Two Matches in Georgia

Rams reverse sweep Point; sweep Truett McConnell

POINT UNIVERSITY GYM | WEST POINT, Ga. - The University of Mobile volleyball team was on the road this weekend for the final time during the 2025 regular season as they faced Point University and Truett McConnell in a doubleheader on Friday. The Rams had just 4 games remaining in the regular season heading into the matches with Point representing a conference match, while Truett McConnell gave the Rams a non-conference match to test themselves with. Despite sweeping Point earlier in the regular season at home, the Skyhawks would give the Rams trouble this time around as the match went 5 sets and saw Mobile pull off a reverse sweep to avoid a loss.

Game One Recap | Mobile @ Point (3-2 | 20-25, 14-25, 25-19, 26-24, 15-10)

With the regular season winding down, and every match playing an important part in deciding the SSAC Regular Season Championship winner, Mobile looked to pick up the win against Point to help keep up momentum and extend their win streak to 10 matches. Point would not make it easy on the visiting Rams as the home side took both set one and two to stun the current SSAC leaders and put them in danger of losing for a third time this season. Set three was back and forth with Mobile pulling ahead late on in the set to claim a 25-19 victory and begin a push to get the win for themselves. The Rams having momentum on their side after claiming set three were given a challenge by the home side in set four as Mobile would eventually eek out a 26-24 win to force the fifth set. After having look off as compared to what we have normally seen from Mobile this season, set five showed the passion that the Rams play with as they cruised to a 15-10 victory to complete the reverse sweep and deny Point the upset.

Mobile had a less than ideal time on offense, hitting .200 as a team throughout the match and recording 26 attack errors. Emma Hampton seem to be exempt from the slump however, hitting an impressive .474 for 10 kills on 19 attempts. Corrina Porch-Maxey had 17 kills while Peyton Frazer added on 10 of her own. Emma McPherson (29 assists) and Hannah Ellis (22 assists) combined for 51 of Mobile's 54 assists in the match while Jaci Drinnon averaged right at 5 digs per set for 25 digs total. Drinnon also had two service aces in the match, being the only Ram to record a number in that stat column.

Game Two Recap | Mobile vs. Truett McConnell (3-0 | 25-18, 25-17, 25-13)

It wouldn't be long before Mobile was back on the court for their meeting with Truett McConnell, originally scheduled for 3:00pm CT. Following a tough match against Point just before, Mobile were looking for things to go better in this one. The team learned from their mistakes in the earlier match and showed major improvements as their hitting percentage increased to .295, their attack errors dropped to just 12 total, and their kills per set jumped from 11.8 across five sets to 15 across three sets. Set one saw the Bears take a 7-4 lead early on with both sides vying for possession of the lead. With Mobile down 17-14 in the set, Head Coach Jon Campbell called a timeout that seemed to work wonders for his side as they proceeded to go on an 11-1 run to take set one 25-18. Set two saw the Rams continue their hot streak, taking a 9-1 lead early on that the Bears were never able to recover from. Mobile would take set two 25-17 while never letting the gap in the scoreboard be less than five points. Much like the previous set, Mobile's confidence was high and the scoreboard would reflect that as they would take set three 25-13.

Emily Osborne had 8 kills on 13 swings with no errors while Corrina Porch-Maxey added another 15 kills to her tally. Emma McPherson was the heartbeat of her side, providing 24 of Mobile's 43 assists while also recording 9 digs, leaving her one short of another double-double. Jaci Drinnon continued to show why she has earned the role as Mobile's libero as she had 23 digs and 6 assists with just 1 reception error.

Up Next for the Rams

The Rams will finish out the regular season at home next weekend with matches against UT-Southern on Friday, November 7th at 6:00pm CT and the regular season closer against Blue Mountain University on Saturday, November 8th at 12:00pm CT. Mobile will be able to wrap up the SSAC Regular Season Championship with a win against the Firehawks on Friday.
