Volleyball Takes Two Wins on Day 1 of SSAC Volleyball Championship

Rams battle through UT-Southern and Blue Mountain to secure place in semifinals

MULTIPLEX at CRAMTON BOWL | MONTGOMERY, Ala. - The University of Mobile Rams kicked off the 2025 SSAC Volleyball Championship this morning in Montgomery, Alabama with a match against UT-Southern before facing the Toppers of Blue Mountain later on in the day. Having just faced these two teams at home last week to close out the regular season, the Rams came prepared for the battles that laid ahead. Mobile would lose set one in both matches before battling back to earn victories over both UT-Southern and Blue Mountain. With the two wins, Mobile have secured their spot as the top team in their group and are now guaranteed to play either William Carey or Point University in the semifinals of the tournament tomorrow afternoon.

Game One Recap | Mobile vs. UT-Southern (3-1 | 23-25, 25-20, 25-21, 25-18)

Starting the morning off early, Mobile took on the Firehawks of UT-Southern for the third time this season, with Mobile looking to go three for three over their opponents this season. Mobile worked quick early on in set one to find themselves with a comfortable 14-6 lead. That comfort would not last long though as the Firehawks stormed back with a stunning 19-8 run that would hand set one to the #5 seeded team. The rest of the match was a close battle between two competitive sides as UT-Southern took an early 8-3 lead in set two before Mobile would battle back to tie it up at 9-9. Set two would continue back and forth win Mobile eventually pulling out a 25-20 victory as the Rams hit at a very high .417% to gain momentum back. Set three saw both sides' hitting percentages drop, but Mobile was able to keep things going as they pulled out the 25-21 victory to move ahead 2-1 in the match. The match would move on to set four as both sides found themselves committing numerous attacking errors. Despite the increase in errors, the Rams continued to hit the ball well as they had 14 kills on their way to a 25-18 win that saw them start the tournament off with a win.

As a team Mobile had 57 kills and 20 attack errors hitting .287 throughout the match. After being named the SSAC Volleyball Player of the Year on Wednesday night, Corrina Porch-Maxey showed why she earned the title, hitting .344 with 15 kills and just 4 errors. Jenny Cope had the highest hitting percentage for Mobile as she hit .583 with 7 kills and no errors. SSAC All-Freshman Team member Hannah Ellis had a game to remember as she led the side with 26 assists with Emma McPherson backing her up with 23 assists of her own. The back-to-back SSAC Defensive Player of the Year Jaci Drinnon paced her side with 17 digs while Georgia Simmons had a solid defensive showing with 11 digs.

Game Two Recap | Mobile vs. Blue Mountain (3-1 | 22-25, 25-20, 25-18, 25-22)

Much like the earlier match against UT-Southern, Mobile would have to find a way to win after dropping the opening set. Blue Mountain would string together several small runs in set one to take the set 25-22 despite a late comeback push by the Rams. Set two would see the two sides trade points back and forth at the start with Blue Mountain having a small 12-10 lead. Following a kill by Sophie Dorris, Jaci Drinnon would go on to serve nine times in a row as Mobile opened up a 19-12 lead. Blue Mountain pushed to take back the lead, but the efforts would fall short as Mobile secured the 25-20 win to split the first two sets at 1-1. Set three would see the Rams take control of the set early on as they would hold the lead over Blue Mountain for the entire set on their way to a 25-18 victory. With the fourth set underway, Mobile would once again jump out to an early lead, but the Toppers would not make it easy going for them. Blue Mountain would come within a point of tying the game as they worked the scores back to a 21-20 Mobile lead, but the Rams would be too much to handle on offense, closing out the match with a 25-22 win in set four to secure the top spot in the group and secure a spot in tomorrow evening's semifinals.

Mobile's offense slipped from game one to game two as the team hitting percentage was .214% against Blue Mountain with 54 kills and 24 errors. Corrina Porch-Maxey once again led the way with 16 kills, backed up by Peyton Frazer with 13 and Emma Hampton with 9. Gabby Sheffield had 4 service aces to lead all players in the match. Emma McPherson served up 27 assists and Hannah Ellis put up 22 of her own while also accounting for 12 of the Rams digs. Jaci Drinnon led in that department with 20 digs while Jenny Cope was a monster at the net with 8 total blocks.
