Men's Basketball Picks Up Two Wins From Two

Rams take down Firehawks and Toppers to go 2-0 in SSAC play

PHARR GYMNASIUM | MOBILE, Ala. - Heading into the weekend before Thanksgiving, the University of Mobile Men's Basketball team opened up SSAC play at home against the Firehawks of UT-Southern on Thursday evening before squaring off against the Toppers of Blue Mountain Christian on Saturday afternoon. The Rams would walk away from the weekend unscathed as they continue their strong start to the season at 7-1 while opening conference play at 2-0.

Game One Recap | Mobile (70) vs. UT-Southern (61):

Against the Firehawks on Thursday, Mobile's Kristiyan Vasilev opened the scoring with a layup before the Firehawks pulled out a 8-4 lead just a few minutes into the half. Aahmod Scarbrough would pull the Rams back within one after draining a 3-pointer before Vasilev handed the lead back to his side with a successful layup. With the lead back in hand, the Rams began to build their lead, going on a 15-0 run to make it 19-8 in favor of the home side. UT-Southern would pull it back within four with 6 minutes left in the first before the Rams began piling on the points to close out the first half ahead 32-22.

Mobile and UT-Southern came out of the halftime break trading buckets back and forth as the lead stabilized around the 10-12 point range for much of the first ten minutes of the second half. Heading down the stretch, Mobile began to shoot lights out while putting in a solid defensive showing as the Rams lead the Firehawks by as much as 20 points, but the final three minutes saw that lead slowly crumble as Mobile would go on to win by 9 points taking a 70-61 victory to open SSAC play.

Mobile's Aahmod Scarbrough and Jarvis Moss both put up 14 points in the win with Dayton Richardson adding 12 of his own and Kristiyan Vasilev contributing 10 to the scoreboard. Zion Hunter was well on his way to having a standout game with 7 rebounds and 6 points in 18 minutes before being ejected on a second technical foul that saw his night end earlier than hoped for. All 8 Rams that saw playing time managed to record a scoring play with no Ram scoring less than 4 points.

Game Two Recap | Mobile (79) vs. Blue Mountain Christian (68):

With a win against UT-Southern to start off conference play, the Rams went into Saturday's game looking to keep things rolling against the Toppers. The first half would prove to be a tough challenge, as the visitors were able to compete very evenly with Mobile for the opening 20 minutes. The Toppers played a strong defensive game for the first half which stopped the Rams from turning any momentum into a run with Mobile managing a narrow 42-39 lead to go into the break.

Luckily for the Rams, the defensive fortitude of their opponents would wear down in the second half as Mobile was able to slowly build their lead up to 13 points just after the 10 minute mark. The team would see out the remainder of the game with Blue Mountain Christian unable to make any true headway to get themselves back into the game. The second half was highlighted by two alley-oop slams by Zion Hunter that helped to keep momentum firmly on the home team's side. The Rams would close out the game with a final score of 79-68 to see the Rams move to 7-1 overall and 2-0 in SSAC play while remaining undefeated at home this season.

Aahmod Scarbrough led the way with 17 points, making seven out of eleven field goals and three of four 3-pointers. Five Rams would finish with double digit points as Zion Hunter, Dayton Richardson, Jarvis Moss, and Alex Hammond all joined Scarbrough in the double digit club. Alex Hammond had a solid outing with 6 rebounds, 4 assists, and 3 steals to add onto his 10 points.

Up Next for the Rams

The University of Mobile's Men's Basketball team is back at home on Tuesday, November 25th at 2:00pm CT for a non-conference meeting with Southeastern University in the Pharr Gymnasium.
