Rams defeat Knights of Marian to advance to final site of national tournament

PHYSICAL EDUCATION CENTER | INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - Competing in the NAIA Volleyball National Championship for the fourth year in a row, the Rams looked to get past the opening round for the first time since 2016 when they defeated Webber International in four sets. This year, the opening round draw saw Mobile travel to Indianapolis, Indiana to face the Knights of Marian University for a chance to advance to the final site in Sioux City, Iowa. With the season on the line for both teams, the match was intense as both teams battled hard for the win. In the end it would be the Rams who came out on top, taking a four set win to keep their season alive and book their place in the next round.

Mobile would get things started with the first serve of the match, as Emma McPherson helped Mobile jump out to an early 4-0 lead. Mobile would hold onto the lead for a while before a 7 point run by Marian gave them a 13-14 lead and put the Rams behind for the first time in the match. The two sides would trade points back and forth before Gabby Sheffield served five straight points for the Rams including 2 service aces. Mobile would take set one 25-23 with the set seeming to have given them all the confidence they needed to win the game. Set two was much of the same as the two sides fought hard for every single point. Mobile was able to come away with a slightly more comfortable 25-21 victory in set two to put the pressure on Marian heading into set three. The Rams struggled to get their offense rolling in set three as errors plagued their hitters. The team racked up a game high 11 attack errors while hitting -.022% in the third set to allow Marian a chance to get back into the game as they would take set three 19-25 to force a set four. With everything on the line and Mobile trying to avoid a fifth set, set four was an intense back and forth between the two sides as Mobile clawed their way up to a 23-20 lead. Following a timeout by the Knights, they would score 3 straight to tie it all up at 23-23. Mobile would take the next point, before Marian took the next two to give them set point. Not to be outdone, the Rams would win the ensuing two points to force match point at 26-25. The Knights would tie it back up, winning the next point before Mobile's Corrina Porch-Maxey put them back ahead 27-26. Gabby Sheffield would come in to serve for Mobile and elation would ensue as an attack error on the Knights would give the Rams a 28-26 win to claim the match and send the team to the next round.

For the Rams, Peyton Frazer led the way on offense as she had a team high 16 kills while Corrina Porch-Maxey and Emily Osborne joined her with double digit kills. Setters Emma McPherson and Hannah Ellis both dished out 23 assists in the victory while Jaci Drinnon continued her stellar season on defense with 28 digs. Emily Osborne was the team's best overall contributor as she managed 10 kills on a .364 hitting percentage while collecting two solo blocks and 4 block assists.
