Tough Road Loss For Women's Basketball

Rams fall to Talladega on the road in final seconds

TALLADEGA, Ala. -  The Mobile Women's Basketball team was on the road again on Monday afternoon for a non-conference meeting with the Tornadoes of Talladega College. The Rams and Tornadoes are former conference opponents with Talladega College formerly competing in the Southern States Athletic Conference before their move to the HBCUAC. Mobile went into the game off the back of a 1-1 week in West Palm Beach, Florida where they defeated Florida Memorial before losing to Keiser. It would be a tough contest for both sides as the game would go down to the final seconds where the hosts would eventually snatch away the victory from the Rams, dropping their overall record to 3-9 on the season.

Mobile would start off hot with Jada Johnson and Deja Pryor combining for the first 8 points of the game. Reigning SSAC Offensive Player of the Week Lamaria Jones would join in and lead the first quarter scoring with 8 points as Mobile lead 21-11 heading into the second quarter. Mobile would improve on their shooting numbers in the second quarter as they dropped 21 points on 57.1% field goal shooting. Not to be outdone though, the home side would keep pace with the Rams as they equaled their 21 points to send the game to halftime with Mobile leading 42-32.

Coming out of halftime, the Rams would see their shooting percentages drop and their number of shots fall as well as Talladega began a comeback that saw the two teams head into the final quarter tied up at 54-54. Mobile would open up the fourth quarter with the first basket, courtesy of a Jarniya Maddox layup. Lamaria Jones would make two free throws after being fouled a little over a minute later as the Rams moved ahead by 4 points. The Rams would do enough to stay ahead of the Tornadoes until the final 2 minutes when the home side leveled things up at 67-67. After a timeout by the Rams with under a minute to go, Jada Johnson was fouled and proceeded to make one of two attempts at the charity stripe to give her side the lead. Jada Johnson would go on to grab the rebound after two missed free throws by Talladega, but an untimely turnover by Luisa Monsalve would see the home side go on to grab victory at the buzzer as a Tornadoes layup would fall in the final seconds. Mobile would suffer a narrow 68-69 defeat that sends them back to conference play looking to improve on their 3-9 overall record and their 0-2 record in the SSAC.

Lamaria Jones led the team with a 18 point, 13 rebound double-double while Jada Johnson provided solid backup with 14 points and 7 rebounds. Deja Pryor shot 4-6 from 3-point range to bring her point tally to 12 in the loss. Emilee Duet found her teammates well in the game as she provided 6 assists.

Conference play is up next for the Rams with the team traveling to Montgomery on Saturday, December 6th for a meeting with Faulkner University. That game is scheduled for a 12:00pm CT tip-off and can be watched live on the Faulkner Sports Network Youtube page.
