TALLADEGA, Ala. - The University of Mobile Baseball team struggled on the road on Tuesday afternoon, Feb. 18, dropping both games of a non-conference doubleheader against Talladega College (Ala.) to fall back below .500 on the season. Mobile was blanked in game one against the Tornadoes, while falling 7-4 in the second game. Both games were scheduled seven-inning contests, with Mobile seeing the overall record fall to 6-7.
Game 1: Talladega 4, Mobile 0
In the opening game, Mobile's offense was stifled as the Rams fell 4-0 to the Tornadoes. The Rams managed only three hits and were unable to push any runs across the plate. Mobile committed two errors on the defensive side in the shutout defeat, while Talladega's defense was perfect with no errors. Talladega's Isaac Guzman drove in all four runs across game one, finishing 3-for-3 at the plate.
Alexis Rodriguez made his second start on the mound for Mobile, working six innings and allowing five hits, four earned runs, while picking up six strikeouts. Catcher Steele Sims was responsible for two of Mobile's three hits, while Breyton Cornelius added the other hit. The Rams struck out five times in game one, leaving seven runners on base.
Game 2: Talladega 7, Mobile 4
Mobile showed more offensive firepower in the second game, tallying nine hits and scoring four runs, but defensive struggles hindered a comeback attempt. A three-run third inning gave the Rams some momentum to spark a rally, but Talladega's six-run frame in the first ultimately sealed Mobile's fate. The Rams ended game two with three errors in the ballgame, while leaving eight runners on base.
Trey Simpkins came up with his best game played so far this season, going 2-for-3 at the dish with a run driven in and a run scored. Grant Driver and Bryce Eddington both finished 1-for-2, while three Rams finished with 1-for-3 lines. Reigning SSAC Baseball Player of the Week Zion Taylor finished 1-for-7 in Tuesday's doubleheader.
On the mound, Ben Buxton was awarded the start but was unable to record an out in the bottom of the first as Talladega pushed across six runs. The Mobile bullpen (Jacob Wright, Lott Putnam, Landon Montgomery, and Peyton Bell) then combined for six innings of relief, allowing just three hits and one run.
