Mobile Sweeps John Melvin University in Friday Doubleheader

Rams Take First Two Games of Weekend Series Against John Melvin Millers

JACOBS FIELD | MOBILE, Ala. – The University of Mobile Baseball team returned home to Jacobs Field and secured a dominant non-divisional doubleheader sweep over John Melvin University (La.) on Friday afternoon, Feb. 21, moving above .500 on the season in the process. The Rams took game one 4-3, while finishing Friday's action with a convincing 18-4 win over the Millers in the second game.

Both games were seven-inning contests, with Mobile improving the overall record to 8-7 on the young season.

Game One: Rams Secure Third Walk-Off

In the first game of Friday's twin bill, Mobile edged past John Melvin with a strong late-game performance, sealing a 4-3 victory. Mobile hit the scoreboard first in the third inning following a Cameron Brock RBI double, later taking a 3-0 lead after Brock delivered his second double of the game to add another run.

John Melvin managed to cut into Mobile's lead late with a pair of runs in the sixth, while tying the game 3-3 in the top of the seventh. From there, Mobile managed to load the bases with no outs in the bottom half of the seventh before Breyton Cornelius connected on an RBI single to left field to win the game.

Cameron Brock finished 3-for-4 at the plate with two RBIs in Mobile's third walk-off victory of the season, while both Breyton Cornelius and Clint Smith each recorded two hits. Leadoff batter Peyton Bell crossed the plate twice in the victory, working two walks in the process.

On the mound, Trey Watson was awarded the start and put together a strong performance on the rubber. Watson finished with 6 1/3 innings of work, striking out seven and allowing six hits. Breyton Cornelius then moved from designated hitter to the mound where he eventually earned the win after pitching 2/3 of an inning.

Game Two: Offense Explodes for Mobile

The second game saw Mobile's offense erupt in an 18-4 rout, capitalizing on John Melvin's struggles on the mound. Mobile's bats came alive immediately, with the Rams totaling eight runs alone in the first inning. Mobile racked up 15 hits in the nightcap, while working nine base-on-balls.

John Melvin did manage to strike first in game two with two runs in the first inning, but Mobile answered with a relentless offensive onslaught throughout the remainder of the game.

Cameron Brock continued to shine at the plate, finishing 4-for-5 in game two with six RBIs, three coming off a three-run homer in the fourth inning. Brock totaled seven hits and eight RBIs during Friday's doubleheader, while finishing a triple shy of the cycle in game two.

Colton Wood also produced nicely at the plate, finishing 2-for-4 with three RBIs, while Peyton Bell managed a 2-for-2 batting line with a pair of RBIs and three runs scored. Catcher Steele Sims joined the RBI party with two during the dominating win, finishing 2-for-4 at the dish.

On the mound, first-year Ram Andin Bolen settled in from a rough first inning and tossed a gem, pitching six innings and striking out 13 batters. He allowed just two hits and two runs, while walking seven. Jaden Clinton closed the door in the seventh to secure the win for Mobile.

Series Finale on Saturday

With the doubleheader sweep on Friday, Mobile looks to sweep the Millers on Saturday, Feb. 22, with the series finale being scheduled for 12:00 p.m. CT at Jacobs Field. John Melvin will look to salvage the series with a win over Mobile.
