JACOBS FIELD | MOBILE, Ala. - One day after the University of Mobile Baseball team began the 2025 campaign with a doubleheader split versus Freed-Hardeman University (Tenn.), both teams returned to Jacobs Field on Sunday afternoon, Feb. 2 for an additional doubleheader to conclude the four-game series to open the season.
Freed-Hardeman got the better of Mobile across both games on Sunday, eventually winning three-straight games to claim the series over the Rams. Mobile begins the season 1-3 on the year following the long weekend at Jacobs Field, pocketing a walk-off victory in the series opener for the lone victory on the year.Â
Game One Recap; Errors Haunt Rams
Mobile struggled to find momentum across game one of Sunday's doubleheader, falling 11-2 in a seven-inning game. The Rams allowed a five-run first inning for the Lions and were unable to recover as Freed-Hardeman capitalized on several two-out RBIs across the game.
Freed-Hardeman put the game away in the fifth inning, where all four runs that crossed the plate were with two outs on the board. Meanwhile, Mobile managed to put a run on the board in the first inning and added another in the fifth, but defensive struggles—including four errors—proved costly. Additionally, seven Rams were left on base in the game one loss as Mobile finished with six hits in the defeat. Zion Taylor finished 1-for-2 with an RBI and a walk in the loss, while five other Rams each recorded one hit.Â
Freed-Hardeman racked up 10 hits in the game, including two home runs. The Lions also took advantage on the base paths, stealing six bases against the Mobile pitching staff. First-year Ram Alexis Rodriguez got the start on the mound for his first appearance of the season but was only able to pitch one frame, allowing five runs, three earned, and two walks.
Game Two Recap; Mobile Comeback Falls Short
In game two of Sunday's doubleheader, Mobile made a valiant push in the late innings, but saw a comeback effort fall short in an 8-6 loss to the Lions. Mobile led 2-1 early, with both starting pitchers dealing through four innings. Senior Trey Watson was awarded the start for the Rams, striking out seven of the first nine batters he faced. However, Watson allowed three runs in the four innings pitched, with Freed Hardeman's Cade Fuller connecting with two home runs against the Mobile right-hander. Watson finished his first start with eight strikeouts and three runs allowed.
Freed-Hardeman managed to push across four additional runs in the middle innings against the Mobile bullpen, taking a 7-2 lead over Mobile entering the back half of the series finale. The Lions added one more insurance run late, but despite trailing 8-2 entering the seventh inning, the Rams showed resilience, scoring two runs in the seventh and adding two more in the ninth to put pressure on the Lions' bullpen. Mobile managed to load the bases in each of the final three innings, with the winning run on at first in the ninth, but Freed-Hardeman's pitching held firm in the final frame to secure the victory and series win.
Mobile's defense committed three errors, while the offense left 16 runners stranded in the game two loss. The Rams worked 10 base-on-balls in the defeat, but struck out 15 times. Sophomore Tyler Wabnitz was the only Ram to finish with multiple hits in the finale, finishing 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored. Sam Bowman, Cameron Brock, and Clint Smith all joined Wabnitz with RBIs in the game.Â
Another Four-Game Series at Jacobs Field Next
Mobile is set for an additional four-game non-conference series next on the 2025 schedule, coming against Montreat College (N.C.) on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 7-8. Both days will see doubleheaders, with Friday's DH scheduled to start at 1:00 p.m. CT. Saturday's DH is set for 12:00 p.m. CT. All four games will be played at Jacobs Field.
