H. AUSTILL PHARR GYMNASIUM | MOBILE, Ala. - The University of Mobile Men's Basketball team pulled off a hard-fought 70-65 victory over Tennessee Southern in a gripping SSAC matchup in Pharr Gymnasium on Thursday, Feb. 6, improving to 10-3 in the SSAC and 17-5 overall on the year.
Mobile secured the win with a strong second-half performance, outscoring the Firehawks, 36-32. Tennessee Southern (9-13, 6-7) kept the game competitive but fell short in the closing moments despite a rally.
How It Happened
Both teams exchanged leads in a tightly contested opening period, with Mobile holding a narrow 34-33 advantage at halftime. Mobile extended their lead to 11 points at one stage in the second half but faced a late push from Tennessee Southern for a scare. However, strong defensive plays and key free throws helped the Rams maintain their lead and capture the victory.
Colin Howells led the way with 13 points and three rebounds, coming up with four clutch points in the final minute. BJ Comer followed with 12 points and four steals, while Ezra McKenna finished one rebound shy of a double-double with 12 points and nine rebounds.
Mobile shot 43.1% as a team in the win, holding Tennessee Southern to a 37.5% mark. Additionally, the Rams' defense forced 14 turnovers, while holding the Firehawks to just six takeaways. UT-Southern managed to stay in the game with an impressive 84% showing from the free-throw line, finishing 21-for-25 from the line. Mobile's depth proved crucial in the victory, with the bench contributing 19 points. Meanwhile, Tennessee Southern struggled from beyond the arc, making just two of 15 three-pointers.
Saturday Action Ahead
The Rams will look to build on Thursday's win in their next matchup on Saturday afternoon, Feb. 8, coming against Blue Mountain Christian (Miss.) at 2:00 p.m. CT in Pharr Gymnasium.
