University of Mobile Softball goes 2-2 in the Gulf Coast Invitational

The Rams Pick Up a Win on each Day of the Tournament

GULF SHORES, Ala. - The University of Mobile Softball team competed in the 2025 Gulf Coast Invitational over March 7-8 and walks away having gone 2-2 during the tournament. The Rams hosted the tournament which brought together 30 NAIA softball programs from all over the nation. Mobile played two games on Friday and two more on Saturday to round out their time in Gulf Shores.

Game One - Mobile 5, Central Baptist 0

Mobile put on a strong performance against Central Baptist to start the tournament. Mobile scored their first run in the second inning before forcing in two more runs on bases loaded walks in the fourth inning to help extend their lead alongside an RBI single, courtesy of Madilyn Sheffield. The game was highlighted by Freshman Riley Smith's no-hitter performance where she walked just one batter throughout the seven inning game. Madilyn Sheffield led the team's offense with 2 hits and 2 RBIs while Breanna Green pitched in with 1 run, 1 hit and 1 RBI.

Game Two - Mobile 2, Cumberlands (Ky.) 6

The Rams faced a much tougher task heading into game two where they faced the #7 Cumberlands of Kentucky. Mobile's lone runs would come in the third inning courtesy of a Lillie Lanham single to right field that scored Lucy Spisto and Carleigh Bowden. The rest of the game went in favor of the Patriots who responded immediately to the Rams, taking the lead by hitting a 3 RBI homerun to left centerfield. Lillie Lanham led the Rams on offense in the loss with 2 hits and 2 RBIs.

Game Three - Mobile 5, LSU-Alexandria 7

Day two for the Rams did not ease up much on the strength of their schedule as they faced the #15 Generals of LSU-Alexandria. The early innings provided a battle between the two teams as they swapped leads before finding themselves locked at a 5-5 stalemate after the third inning. The Generals would eventually take a 3 run lead in the top of the eight inning and the Rams couldn't generate enough offense to mount the comeback. Miah Simmons was one of the more productive Rams on offense providing 1 hit, 1 RBI and walked twice.

Game Four - Mobile 6, Brenau 4

To round out the tournament, Mobile faced the Brenau Golden Tigers, who are currently receiving votes in the most recent NAIA coaches poll. The Rams would find themselves down 1-4 after the third inning before mounting a 5 run inning in the sixth inning to seal the comeback victory. Gracie Mitchell had a game to remember as she recorded 3 hits, 2 RBIs and a run to help Mobile get their second win of the tournament. Avery Harrell would get the win for the Rams, pitching 4 & 2/3 innings and recording 4 strikeouts.

Up Next for the Rams

Mobile are back in action on Tuesday, March 11 for a doubleheader against Saint Xavier University at home. The Rams are 13-6 overall this season and are ranked #22 in the most recent NAIA coaches' poll.
