Rams Earn Massive Draw Against Firehawks

Kaithlyn Chavez free kick goal earns Mobile a 1-1 draw with UT-Southern

THE JUNGLE | MOBILE, Ala. - The University of Mobile women's soccer team picked up a big result in SSAC play on Saturday afternoon, earning a hard fought 1-1 draw against the No.16 ranked UT-Southern Firehawks. The Rams move to 2-0-1 in SSAC play and are now 6-2-1 overall.

Following a late night matchup on Thursday evening against the Blue Mountain Toppers, the Rams turned their preparations to the Firehawks of UT-Southern who they were set to face at 11:00am CT on Saturday morning. The Rams and the Firehawks were both strong in the matchup from the start with both sides creating opportunities early on. It would be the visitors who would score first however, burying an effort past Mobile goalkeeper Sarah Polk in the 17th minute to make it 1-0. For the rest of the first half, Mobile worked hard to create opportunities to get themselves back in the match, but were denied many shooting opportunities, taking just five shots in the first half.

The Rams would come out of halftime with a point to prove as they immediately started to take more control of the match. The Rams piled on the pressure and forced a save out of the Firehawks goalkeeper in the 47th minute. Ariana Taylor would have a shot blocked in the 50th minute, keeping the score level for the moment. The efforts of the Rams would finally be rewarded in the 53rd minute where, after a winning a free kick on the left side of the Firehawks penalty area, Andrei Kaithlyn Chavez whipped in a free kick that found the upper left side of the goal. The Rams and the Firehawks would battle back and forth throughout the remainder of the second half, with the Rams best opportunity to take the lead coming in the 81st minute when Chavez had a penalty kick saved.

Sarah Polk would end up being the true hero of the match, with a stunning 7 goals to deny the Firehawks, including a flurry of saves and punches/claims on corner kicks to keep the match level.

Up Next for the Rams

Mobile (6-2-1, 2-0-1) will now turn their attention to October 2nd when they travel to Thomasville, Georgia to face the Nighthawks of Thomas University at 1:00pm CT.
