Men's Basketball Falls to William Carey in Overtime

Rams succumb to late pressure from Crusaders; lose in overtime

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Following a strong win against Loyola on the road on Thursday night, the University of Mobile Men's Basketball team looked to make it two wins in two to start off 2026 as they hit the road once again to face conference rivals, William Carey, in Hattiesburg. Mobile entered the contest sitting atop the SSAC West standings following their win over the Wolf Pack, and a win against the Crusaders would be necessary to retain their hold on that place. Despite a strong first half for the Rams, the hosts were able to build back into the contest during the second half where they were able to force overtime. In overtime, Mobile would be unable to truly get things going as the Crusaders would go on to take a 92-83 victory which saw the Rams fall to third in the SSAC West standings.

It would be Dayton Richardson who would open up the scoring for Mobile as he connected on a layup in the paint. He would follow that up with a three point shot from the wing to keep things level at 5 a piece. Mason Sword would be the next scorer for the Rams, making back-to-back layups and a 3-pointer to give the Rams a 12-7 lead. As the first half continued on, the Rams would begin to pull away, leading the Crusaders by 14 points with 3:33 left before halftime. That lead would be cut down by the hosts via a 12-3 run as Mobile would lead 46-41 at halftime.

The second half would start with Mobile finding themselves on the wrong end of an 11-3 run as the Crusaders captured the lead in the opening five minutes of the second half. Aahmod Scarbrough would help kickstart the Rams momentum midway through the half, scoring 7 points in 2 minutes as Mobile retook the lead. Scarbrough would then cap off that sequence with an authoritative dunk, forcing the Crusaders into using a timeout as the Rams lead by 7 points. The Crusaders would come out of the timeout the stronger of the two sides as they clawed back at Mobile's lead, eventually tying things up at 71-71. In the final four minutes, both sides would trade the lead with the Crusaders eventually tying things up with 17 seconds left after making two free throws. Zion Hunter would get an opportunity to take the lead back, but would miss his free throw attempt, sending the game into overtime.

In the overtime period, things went almost exclusively the way of the home side with the Rams scoring just 6 points courtesy of Zion Hunter and Mason Sword. Mobile would fall 92-83 in overtime to lose their grip on the top spot in the SSAC West and dropping to 5-2 in conference play. Zion Hunter would lead the scoring for Mobile, putting up 26 points, 8 rebounds, 1 assist, and a block. Aahmod Scarbrough and Mason Sword both had productive offensive games with 14 points each while Dayton Richardson rounded out the double digit scorers with 13 points. As a team, the Rams shot 46.6% from the field, 38.5% from distance, and 62.5% from the line.

Up Next for the Rams

The Rams return home next week as they face Point University in the Pharr Gymnasium. They will be looking to get back in to the win column against a Skyhawks side that is currently last in the SSAC East standings. That game can be watched live, for free, on Urban Edge Network with tip-off scheduled for 5:30pm CT!
