PHARR GYMNASIUM | MOBILE, Ala. – It was an eventful evening in the Pharr Gymnasium with Mobile Men's Basketball taking on Dalton State College in what was set to be a showdown between two of last year's best SSAC teams. The visitors came into the contest sporting an overall record of 11-6, while the Rams looked to improve on their 5-15 record. At the end of the night, it would be Mobile who walked away with the victory in hand, defeating the Roadrunners with a final score of 81-71. The University of Mobile celebrated Plaid For A Purpose during the halftime break with many students and fans bringing stuffed animals to the game which are set to be donated to local groups.
Dalton State would control the game for the first 5 minutes, taking an early lead and jumping out five points ahead of the hosts. Mobile would not be behind for long with Zion Hunter knocking down 3-pointers on back-to-back possessions as the Rams would take an 8-7 lead. Mobile would begin to create their own lead before the Roadrunners tied things back up at 22-22 with 8:38 left to go in the first half. At the end of the first, Mobile would find themselves ahead 40-32 with Zion Hunter leading the way with 13 points, while Aahmod Scarbrough and Mason Sword chipped in with 8 and 6 points respectively.
The second half saw the entertainers in Mobile's Squad come to life as they put on a show for the home crowd. Just 3 minutes into the half, Zion Hunter set up Mason Sword for the alley-oop dunk giving fans just a small taste of what was to come later in the half. Mobile's lead would hover around 10 points for most of the second half with every Dalton State basket having an answer on the other end from the Rams.
The final five minutes were highlighted by Mobile's own Zion Hunter who, on back-to-back possessions, threw down two impressive slams to firmly cement the Rams' control of the match. Following those two dunks, the fans in the Pharr Gymnasium let the Roadrunners know of their presence as they grew more vocal through the remainder of the night. When the final buzzer sounded off at the end, Mobile had taken down the #3 team in the SSAC East with a final score of 81-71. The Rams saw their conference record improve to 5-5 while they now sit level with UT-Southern in the SSAC West based on conference record.
