Men's Basketball Tips-Off 2026 with Road Win over Loyola

Mobile defeats Wolf Pack in New Orleans to reach 10 win mark

NEW ORLEANS, La. - It would end up being an ideal start to 2026 for the University of Mobile Men's Basketball team as they played their first game of the new year on the road in New Orleans against the Wolf Pack of Loyola. The contest was set to be a big one as both sides looked to lay claim on the desired 1st place spot in the SSAC West standings with the NAIA Hoops Report team labeling the game as one of their six "NAIA MBB Games of the Day". Loyola entered the night on top of those standings, but it would be the Rams who would end the night on top as they came away with a 68-62 win in The Den.

Mobile and Loyola would open up the game with an exciting back and forth struggle for the lead as the two sides would trade the lead five times in the opening six minutes. It would be the Wolf Pack who would lay claim to the longest lead of the first half however as they would begin to settle in and slowly outpace Mobile's scoring with their lead growing to ten points with a little over 8 minutes left in the half. The Rams would not be phased however as Zion Hunter and Mason Sword led an incredible 16 point charge to see the Rams trail by just 1 point at halftime.

Much like the first half, the opening minutes of the second period of play would see both sides jostle for possession of the lead. Aahmod Scarbrough would help to begin Mobile's second half charge as he scored five points and grabbed a rebound leading to the go-ahead bucket by Kareem Harris all in the span of a minute. From that point forward, the lead would stay firmly in the hands of Mobile as they staved off the attempts by Loyola to reclaim the lead. Oliver Boyle would play an important role in holding the lead as he would score all 10 of his points in the final 10 minutes to help his side hold firm. Loyola would send the Rams to the line for free throws towards the end in a last ditch effort to get a result, but things would stay on the up for the Rams as they closed out the evening with a 68-62 win to claim first place in the SSAC West standings.

Zion Hunter led all players in the game with 20 points while Aahmod Scarbrough and Oliver Boyle both joined him in the double-digit scoring group. Mason Sword had a great game with 9 points, 7 rebounds, and 5 assists. Kareem Harris would also stand out as he continues to grow into his larger role with the team, scoring 6 points and leading the team with 6 assists. The Rams shot 47.1% from the field, 19% from three, and 64% from the line in the win.
