Softball Sweeps Spring Hill In Season Opener

Seventh inning comeback pushes Rams past Badgers

UM SOFTBALL FIELD | MOBILE, Ala. - On a warm February afternoon, the University of Mobile Softball team got their 2026 campaign underway as they faced off against their crosstown rivals, Spring Hill College, in a 2:00pm CT doubleheader. While the Rams were getting ready to play their first games of the season, the Badgers came into the contest sporting a 4-3 record, having started their season back on January 30th in Gulf Shores, Alabama. Both games were full of action with both teams pushing each other to the very end of the contests. In the end, Mobile would come away with a spotless record while also showcasing their resilience in tough, late game situations.

Game One - Mobile 6, Spring Hill 5

Mobile wasted no time putting themselves ahead as Diana Arcay singled to right field in the first inning, scoring teammate Lucy Spisto from third base. Lillie Lanham would double the lead in the bottom of the second as she worked a bases loaded walk to score Madison Medley. In the bottom of the third, the Rams would make it 3-0 as Jenni Goins hit a ground ball to the short stop that allowed Milianis Cruz Martinez to come across home plate from third. In the fourth inning, Spring Hill finally broke through and pushed two runs across to cut Mobile's lead down to just one run. Mobile would respond immediately as Daryelin Rivas hit a double to right center that saw Gracie Mitchell score. Shortly after that, Lillie Lanham hit a ball through the right side gap to bring Rivas home. The scoring would end for Mobile in the 6th inning as Lillie Lanham would hit a sacrifice fly to right field that saw Daryelin Rivas round the bases and score. Game one of the doubleheader would end with the Rams taking a 6-5 win to open the season.

Game Two - Mobile 5, Spring Hill 4

Game two took a bit longer for the scoring to get going as fans had to wait until the bottom of the third to see a runner come home. The wait however, would be well worth it as Lillie Lanham got her home run account opened up early in the season, blasting the ball over the left field wall to score two runs. While it was the Rams who opened the scoring, Spring Hill would fight back in the fifth and sixth innings as they scored four runs to put the Rams down by two heading into the seventh inning.

That final inning would see the Rams show their strength and test their ability to get out of tough situations. The first two batters for Mobile were both sent back to the dugout by the Badgers defense, and the Rams were looking likely to split the doubleheader with their rivals. The story doesn't end there though as Lucy Spisto reached first after an error by the short stop, before Lillie Lanham managed a walk. Diana Arcay would put the Rams within one of the Badgers after hitting a single through the right side to score Spisto. With runners on first and third, Head Coach Alison Sellers-Cook made two changes, as Erin Degruise pinch ran for Diana Arcay, and Kaitlynn Robertson pinch hit for Katelynn Kempton. Degruise would go on to steal second during Robertson's at-bat, leaving Mobile with runners on second and third. The comeback was on for the Rams, and all of the pressure would rest on the freshman from Orange Beach, Alabama as she continued her at-bat. The saying that "pressure makes diamonds" would most certainly apply here as Robertson sent the ball through the left side, giving Erin Degruise and Lillie Lanham the time to make it home. The walk-off victory gave Mobile the perfect end to a great opening day, as they start off their 2026 season with a 2-0 record as they prepare to face NAIA opposition for the first time next week.

Up Next for the Rams

The Rams will return to action on Monday, February 16th for a non-conference doubleheader against the Fire of Southeastern University. That doubleheader will be the first of two that the Rams play next week in Lakeland, Florida. That doubleheader can be watched live, for free, on Urban Edge Network with first pitch scheduled for 12:00pm CT!
