Rams Swept by Southeastern in Four Game Series

Mobile Baseball faces tough competition against last year's NAIA National Championship Runner-Ups

JACOBS FIELD | MOBILE, Ala. – The University of Mobile Baseball team took on another tough test over the weekend at Mike Jacobs Field as they faced the runner-ups from last year's NAIA National Championship, the Fire of Southeastern University. In a four game series stretched out over three days, the Rams battled hard against a team that ranked at #3 in the Preseason GoRout NAIA Baseball Coaches' Top 25 Poll. While the Rams kept it close in the first and last games of the series, the Fire were too much to handle in all four games as the Fire swept the series to drop the Rams to 1-11 on the season. The conclusion of the series marks the end of the toughest stretch of the season for the Rams as the College Baseball Analytics website PEARatings.com has Mobile's first three opponents of 2026, Louisiana Christian, Georgia Gwinnett, and Southeastern at #12, #2, and #9 in their TSR (Total Strength Rating) rankings respectively.

Game 1 - Mobile 3Southeastern 4

The Rams started off the series on the front foot as, in the bottom of the first, Trevor Murphy got on base with a fielder's choice which saw Grant Driver come home to score the first run of the day. Southeastern tied things up in the top of the third inning with a sacrifice fly to left field that pushed their runner home. Mobile would respond in the bottom of the inning with Ethan Hilpert hitting a sacrifice fly of his own to center field that allowed Reed Wilson to cross home plate. In the bottom of the fifth, it would be almost the exact same scoring play as earlier as Ethan Hilpert hit a sacrifice fly to right field to score Reed Wilson. Mobile's 3-1 lead would last less than an inning though as the Fire would hit a 3-run homer to left field to take the lead. The Rams had their opportunities to get back into the game, but were unable to capitalize on the chances, leaving 5 runners on base in the remaining 4 innings to fall 3-4 in the opening game of the series.

Eli Smith got the start on the mound for Mobile, pitching 3 innings with 3 strikeouts, 1 hit, and 1 run. Jake Quina, Christian Sanchez, and Macks Bishop would all see time on the mound throughout the nine inning game, but Jake Quina would get hit with the loss following the 6th inning home run for the visitors.

Game 2 - Mobile 2, Southeastern 10

Following the loss in the solo game on Thursday, the Rams looked to turn things around on Saturday with a doubleheader scheduled between the two sides. Unfortunately, neither game would go the way that Mobile would have hoped for as Southeastern jumped ahead in the third inning of game one and never looked back. Two runs would score for the fire in the third, and another three would come in on a home run down the right field line in the fifth. Adding more fuel to the Fire was another home run to right field in the top of the sixth before an RBI single up the middle pushed Southeastern's advantage to 0-8. Reed Wilson would finally find a breakthrough for the Rams with a 2 RBI single through the middle in the bottom of the sixth that saw Eli Smith and Weston Tubbs score. Despite the breakthrough, the Rams would not score again, and the Fire would add another two runs to their total in the seventh inning to end things at 2-10 in favor of the visitors.

Logan Brewer got the start on the mound and through 4.1 innings of work, he threw 7 strikeouts while facing 23 batters. Carson Ellis and Luke Barron both made relief appearances in the contest, but ultimately it would be Brewer who would take the hit to his record, falling to 0-2 on the mound this season.

Game 3 - Mobile 2, Southeastern 12

Much like the game earlier in the day, this contest would largely favor the visitors as Mobile struggled to get runs on the board at the same pace as their opponents. By the bottom of the third, Southeastern had already pushed 5 runs across home plate, leaving the Rams a sizable gap to try and close. Ethan Hilpert would get the Rams on the board for first time in this game with a double down the right field line giving Ethan Plank time to run home and score. Another run would score in the bottom of the fourth as Colton Wood hit a solo-shot homer to left field, cutting the lead down to 2-6. Throughout the rest of the evening, Mobile's offense was unable to get the hits they needed, leaving just 4 runners on base in the remaining innings as Southeastern continued to pile on the runs, with the final score reading 2-12.

The starting pitcher in this one was Brody Swindle who made it through two innings of work before being replaced. Adrian Roman, Alexis Rodriguez Ruiz, Isidro Jiminez, and Colston Fultz would all get some time on the mound, but the batters for Southeastern would have all of their numbers as they would all have at least one earned run against their name at the end of the day.

Game 4 - Mobile 4, Southeastern 5

Closing out the series on Saturday, Mobile looked to salvage something from the weekend while avoiding the sweep. Despite out-hitting the Fire through ten innings, Mobile was unable to get the result they were hoping for as they would fall 4-5 in extra innings. It was all Mobile through the first few innings as Trevor Murphy had a sacrifice fly to right field that scored Dylan Moran in the bottom of the first. Colton Wood would score on an error by the catcher in the bottom of the fourth to double his side's advantage while Wil King had an RBI single later in the inning to make it 3-0 to the Rams. Southeastern would take a 4-3 lead in the top of the 7th, but Mobile would respond quickly to tie things up in the bottom of the 8th as Weston Tubbs would come home to score. With the game in extra innings, Mobile would have their opportunity to walk things off with the bases loaded and 2 outs on the board, but the defense for the Fire would hold firm, making the third out and stranding all three Rams on base as Mobile fell 4-5 to close out the series.

It would be another start for returner Andin Bolen who pitched for 6 innings before getting pulled back into the dugout. He was replaced by Matthew Young who threw 2/3rds of an inning before replaced by Macks Bishop. Bishop would close out the game on the mound and was ultimately credited with the loss after his 3.1 innings of work.

Up Next for the Rams

For Mobile, their next game comes against the Tornadoes of Talladega College on Tuesday, February 17th. That doubleheader can be watched live, for free, on Urban Edge Network with first pitch scheduled for 11:30am CT!
