JACOBS FIELD | MOBILE, Ala. - The Mobile Rams Baseball team began conference play on Friday, facing the Firehawks of UT Southern in a doubleheader to start the series. The Rams were able to win the first two games of a three game home stand, opening up their conference record to an undefeated 2-0. At the conclusion of Friday's games, Mobile was 5-12, and had already won the series heading into Saturday's final game against the Firehawks. They will try to go for the sweep in the final game, and major momentum heading into their next game against USSU on the road.
Game 1 - Mobile 7, UT Southern 5
The first of two Friday games started with Logan Brewer taking the mound for this seven inning showdown. A hitless first inning from Brewer was complimented by the Rams in the bottom half of the inning, as Mobile got off to a hot start offensively. A two-run double from Trevor Murphy down the left field line saw two runs cross the plate. Colton Wood immediately followed that up with an RBI double of his own, scoring Murphy and making the score 3-0. Three batters later, Damian Ortiz decided to join in on the hit parade, singling through the left side, and completing a four-run first inning. The next three innings would consist of the Rams continuing to see the ball well, while the Firehawks couldn't find any answers with their bats. Another RBI by Trevor Murphy, this time on a single, made the score 5-1. Wil King would then proceed to extend the lead on an RBI ground out, scoring Weston Tubbs. Colton Wood once more decided to contribute an RBI, grabbing a bag on a single, and settling the total number of runs to 7 on the day for Mobile. The Rams were up 7-1 by the end of the fourth inning, but had a rude awakening as the Firehawks tried to put up some runs late. The final three innings of play had runs come across the plate for the Firehawks. This was to no avail for UT Southern, and the Rams were able to hold on and win, 7-5.
Logan Brewer was credited with the win, on a day where he only allowed two runs through four innings pitched, and also being credited with six strikeouts. The relief trio of Christian Sanchez, Isidro Jimenez, and Macks Bishop also had themselves a day. The trio combined for a total of two hits allowed, and contributed six strikeouts. In terms of batting, it was Trevor Murphy, Colton Wood, and Damian Ortiz who saw the ball very well. The three batters combined for six of the Rams total seven runs, while also having two hits a piece.
Game 2 - Mobile 9, UT Southern 3
Andin Bolen would take the hill for the Rams nightcap against the Firehawks. Much like the first game, solid pitching was also helped by the Rams using their bats incredibly well. Rather than a first inning shelling, Mobile started their run off hot in the second inning. Ethan Plank put the first two runs on the board after legging out a triple into right center. Trevor Murphy then proceeded to also pull a triple-bagger, scoring a run after his ball found the right center gap. Neither team would go on to score a run until the top of the fifth inning, when UT Southern found their first run of the game. The Rams followed that up with a run of their own in the bottom half of the inning. A wild pitch would score Colton Wood, and extend the lead to 4-1 for Mobile. The very next inning spelled trouble for the home team, as the Firehawks woke up, and cut the lead down to one run, making it a 4-3 lead for the Rams. The Rams would go without a hit in the seventh, however, there would be a masterful barrage of runs coming home in the eighth. An Angel Ramos single and Weston Tubbs fielder's choice each scored a run, and the scoreboard read 6-3 in favor of the hosts until Trevor Murphy came to the plate. Murphy hit the ball down the left field line, and cleared the bases, adding three runs to the board and making it 9-3 for the hot-hitting Rams. It was an eighth inning that the Firehawks could not recover from, and Macks Bishop came in to finish the job and claim the series for Mobile.
Andin Bolen was credited with the win, moving his record to 2-0 on the season. After Bolen's day was done, Matthew Young, Adrian Roman, Carson Ellis, and Macks Bishop came in and each got a full innings worth of work. Their pitching only allowed two runs, and a total of four strikeouts. Another phenomenal showing of the bats for Mobile was highlighted by Trevor Murphy, who went 3-for-5 and had a total of four RBI.
