Baseball Splits Non-Conference DH with Faulkner

Rams rally in game two for big win over the Eagles

JACOBS FIELD | MOBILE, Ala. - It was a midweek meeting for two SSAC opponents on Tuesday afternoon at Mike Jacobs Field when the Rams welcomed Faulkner University for their non-conference doubleheader. the University of Mobile baseball team has been playing well of late, holding a record of 7-5 since the beginning of March, with wins against Loyola, Blue Mountain, and UT Southern coming during that time. This meeting with Faulkner would prove to be a good test for the Rams as they split on the day despite outhitting the visitors in both games. Mobile would fall 2-5 in game one before storming back in game two for a 9-4 win.

Ben Buxton got the start on the mound for Mobile in game one, but his day would ultimately be cut short after a tough first inning that saw the Eagles claim a 4-0 lead. Mobile would get a run back in the bottom of the first through a defensive error that allowed Eli Smith to find home plate. The pitchers would rotate regularly for the Rams for the remainder of the game with Adrian Roman throwing the most with two complete innings of work. Eli Smith would get Mobile their only other run of the game in te bottom of the fifth as he hit a single to left field to score Ethan Plank from third base. Despite leading Faulkner in hits 9-8, the Rams would fall 2-5 as they couldn't get their runners home, leaving a total of 6 runners on base.

Game two would be the same story, flipped around as the Rams experienced a 5 run first inning to give themselves a lead that they would not drop. Adrian Salas started things off with a double to center field that scored Weston Tubbs and Eli Smith. Ethan Hilpert would hit a sacrifice fly that scored Trevor Murphy before Dylan Moran singled to score Salas. Dylan Moran would score the final run of the inning as the was able to reach home after a defensive error allowed Reed Wilson to get on base. The big moment of the game would come in the bottom of the 6th with Faulkner having pulled themselves back into the game with a score of 5-3 in favor of Mobile. Reed Wilson was hit by pitch to start things off before Faulkner intentionally walked Mobile's next two batters, Eli Smith and Trevor Murphy. With the bases loaded, Adrian Salas would take his place in the batter's box. Salas would work a 2-2 count through the first 6 pitches before barreling up on the 7th, launching the ball deep over the left center wall for a Grand Slam! The Rams would go on to win 9-4 with Salas providing the necessary insurance to secure the win.

Up Next for the Rams
