Mobile Staff Pick Up Awards at Annual SSAC Banquet

Rob DeLong and Dr. Kathy Dunning given highest honors by their peers

MONTGOMERY, Ala. - Two members of the University of Mobile Athletic Department earned honors at the annual SSAC End of Year Banquet on Sunday evening. The banquet was held on the campus of Faulkner University and featured staff from every SSAC institution joining together to celebrate the overall achievements and accomplishments of the conference and it's members. The night saw Athletic Trainer Rob DeLong, and outgoing Faculty Athletics Representative Dr. Kathy Dunning be named as the most outstanding individuals in their specific roles over the course of the previous year. The awards are voted on by their peers from around the SSAC, making the honors all the more special.

Rob DeLong | Grant Fairchild Athletic Trainer of the Year

Having joined the Rams in 2022, Rob DeLong has overseen the care and rehabilitation of student-athletes from all of Mobile's 21 competitive sports. He has worked at all levels of sports, from high school all the way to the professional level, and has brought with him the knowledge and experience to provide the highest level of care to every student-athlete.

Sally Shouppe, University of Mobile Athletic Director: "Rob is just the best. He stepped into a one-man show and handled it with ease and proficiency. Thankfully we have expanded our AT department and now Rob oversees that along with excellent care to our athletes.  He is focused on taking the best care of our athletes and comes to practices, games and camps. He has been innovative in equipment needed for our program and is a sounding board, mentor and leader for our athletes. Rob shows compassion or toughness whichever is needed for the athlete. Rob is always there for the athlete."

Amber Campbell, University of Mobile Assistant Volleyball Coach: "Rob keeps a down-to-earth approach to every coach and student-athlete he comes in contact with. He's knowledgeable and compassionate, and he holds the line with wisdom between pushing a student-athlete and resting them. Rob has great rapport with the athletes, and UM is grateful to have him."

Dr. Kathy Dunning | Dr. Ronald Melton Faculty Athletics Representative of the Year

Dr. Kathy Dunning began her career at the University of Mobile in 1994 and had served as the Faculty Athletics Representative since 2010. This year marks her third time claiming the award, having been named the FAR of the year on two previous occasions in 2020 and 2024. She recently announced her retirement from the University of Mobile at the end of the 2025-2026 academic year.

Sally Shouppe, University of Mobile Athletic Director: "She has been outstanding to work with and plays such an important role in our department. She works hard to keep us on track with eligibility and compliance, while also being a strong supporter of our student-athletes. Whether she is helping behind the scenes or cheering them on at games, she has been a tremendous asset to our student-athletes, our department and our institution."
