Men's Soccer History

2023:

Finished the 2023 season as the SSAC Regular Season and Tournament Champions, defeating rival William Carey in the tournament final in Montgomery, Ala. The Rams qualified for the NAIA Men's Soccer National Championship Tournament for the fifth consecutive season, eventually falling in the Round of 16 to Milligan University via PKs in Wichita, Kan. Ended the year with a 15-2-3 overall record.

Ty Turner was named NAIA First-Team All-American, while earning the SSAC's Golden Gloves Award. Henrique Luro Mendes and Zacharia Hasler were both named NAIA Second-Team All-Americans. Mobile saw three SSAC First-Team All-Conference selections and three SSAC Second-Team All-Conference honorees. Louis Dolcini was named the SSAC Freshman of the Year and head coach Daniel Whelan earned his fourth SSAC Coach of the Year honor.


2022:

Finished the 2022 season with an 18-4-1 overall record, going 6-2 in conference play. Earned second-straight host bid for the NAIA Men's Soccer Opening Round, eventually winning the Mobile Bracket and advanced to the 2022 NAIA Men's Soccer National Championship match in Decatur, Ala. for second year in a row. Fell to Bethel University (Ind.) 3-1 in championship match, ending second-straight season as the NAIA Men's Soccer National Championship Runners-Up.

Lucas Ros, Sebastian Jorgge, and Jose Sanabria were all selected to the SSAC Men's Soccer First-Team All-Conference Team, with all three earning NAIA All-America honors. Jorgge was named a NAIA Second-Team All-American and Sanabria picked up NAIA Third-Team All-America status. Ros was named an NAIA All-American Honorable Mention.

2021:

Finished with an 18-3-1 overall record. Claimed the 2021 SSAC Regular Season Championship with a perfect 7-0 conference record, while earning a host-bid for the NAIA Men's Soccer Opening Round. The Rams claimed the opening round championship against three other teams in the Mobile bracket. The opening round victory advanced Mobile to the final site of the 2021 NAIA Men's Soccer National Championship played in Decatur, Alabama.

Mobile managed to win their way through the tournament, eventually earning a runner-up finish in the national championship match after falling 2-0 to Keiser University. The runner-up finish is the fourth in program history, with Mobile earning the national title in 2002.

Head coach Daniel Whelan earned his 100th career victory during the 2021 season, while claiming his third SSAC Men's Soccer Coach of the Year honor. Graduating forward Alejo Binaghi was named the NAIA Men's Soccer Player of the Year, becoming the second Ram ever to earn the prestigious honor. Additionally, Binaghi earned an NAIA First-Team All-America selection, while being named SSAC Men's Soccer Player of the Year, SSAC Men's Soccer Offensive Player of the Year and SSAC Men's Soccer Golden Boot winner.

Binaghi was one of eight Rams selected to the SSAC Men's Soccer First-Team All-Conference Team. Joining Binaghi with NAIA All-America status were Angel Almiron, Antoine Bedos, Rodrigo Paredes who were selected to the NAIA Men's Soccer Third-Team All-America Team. Additionally, Jose Sanabria, Joshua Bynoe, Maxime Benoit, and Sebastian Jorgge earned NAIA Men's Soccer Honorable Mention honors.


2020-21:

Finished with an overall record of 10-6 and 4-2 in conference play. Earned an at-large bid in the 2020-21 NAIA Men's Soccer National Championship. Defeated Reinhardt University, 5-0 to advance to the finals of the opening round and eventually fell to Keiser University, 1-0 to see their season come to an end.

Ronaldo Fortune and Emman Rahimi were both selected to the SSAC First-Team All-Conference team. Alejo Binaghi, Cameron Cranton, Angel Almiron, and Archie Bean all earned SSAC Second-Team All-Conference selections.

2019:

Finished the season with a 17-2-2 overall record and 7-0-1 in SSAC action. Rams advanced up to the No. 3 team in the NAIA at one point late in the season. Won the SSAC Regular-Season Championship. Lost in PKs against William Carey in the SSAC Championship Tournament. Lost in the second round of the NAIA National Championship Tournament to Missouri Valley College.

Head Coach Daniel Whelan was named SSAC Coach of the Year. Ellis Roberts was named SSAC Defensive Player of the Year. Ronaldo Fortune and Yazid Omri were named NAIA All-American Honorable Mentions. Fortune and Omri along with Alec McKinley, Michael Samnik, and Ellis Roberts were named to the SSAC All-Conference Team. The University of Mobile Men's Soccer team was awarded the 2019 SSAC Team Sportsmanship Award.

2018:

Finished 13-4 overall and 5-3 in SSAC action. Rams fell in 2OT against William Carey in the semifinals of the SSAC Tournament. 

Nathaniel Bedai and Victor Pimentel were named to the SSAC All-Conference Team. Bedai was also named as a NAIA All-American Honorable Mention. Yazid Omri was named to the SSAC All-Freshman Team. 

2017:

Finished the season 14-4-3 overall and 5-1-1 in SSAC play. Rams were ranked the No. 6 team in the NAIA at season's end. Defeated rival William Carey 5-1 to claim the SSAC Championship. Rams lost 0-2 in the quarterfinals of the NAIA National Championship Tournament to No. 4 Missouri Valley College.

Lamine Conte was named to the NAIA 2nd-Team All-American Team. Guilherme Altoe, Paul Ledsham, and Nathaniel Bedai were NAIA All-American Honorable Mentions. 

2016:

Finished 11-7 overall and 5-2 in the SSAC. Lost in the first round of the SSAC Conference Tournament, 1-0, to Faulkner University. Newton Henry was named SSAC Offensive Player of the Year and won the SSAC Golden Boot. Newton Henry, Casey Culver and Jordan Sinclair were named 1st-Team All-Conference, while Matt McArthur and Calum Kearney were named to the 2nd-Team All-Conference list. Lamine Conte and Mo Cande were named to the SSAC All-Freshman list. 12 players were named to the SSAC All-Academic team. Calum Kearney was named a CoSIDA Academic All-District athlete. Matthew Jakubik was named a Daktronics-NAIA Scholar-Athlete. 

2015:

SSAC Regular Season Champions. Finished 11-6-2 overall and 5-1-2 in SSAC action. Finished RV in the final NAIA Top-25. Newton Henry, Jordan Sinclair and Pierre Mangold named Honorable Mention NAIA All-Americans. Henry named SSAC Offensive Player of the Year. Sinclair named SSAC Defensive Player of the Year and SSAC Freshman of the Year. Those two and Pierre Mangold named 1st-Team All-Conference. Elijah Gibson named 2nd-Team All-Conference. Matthew McArthur and Sinclair named All-Freshman. Harry McGregor, James Hayley and Mitch Golding named Daktronics-NAIA Scholar-Athletes.
 

2014:

SSAC Regular Season Champions. Daniel Whelan named head coach. Finished the season 15-4-3 overall and 7-1 in SSAC action. Team advanced to the NAIA National Championship Quarterfinals before falling 2-1 to Marymount. Gaetan Massiah and Jubril Lawal named Second Team NAIA All-Americans and Xavier Audergon named Third Team NAIA All-American. Massiah named SSAC Player of the Year and Lawal named SSAC Defensive Player of the Year. Whelan named SSAC Coach of the Year. Four Rams named 1st-Team All-SSAC and two named 2nd-Team All-SSAC. Seven named Daktronics-NAIA Scholar-Athletes.


2013:

Finished the season 9-9 overall and 5-6 in SSAC action. Pierre Mangold and Jubril Lawal named 2nd-Team All-Conference. Justin Dillenschneider, Luis Esteves, Mitch Golding, James Hayley, Alvaro Pichardo, Alex Swan and Samuel Weeks were named SSAC All-Academic. Dillenschneider, Hayley, Pichardo and Weeks named Daktronics-NAIA Scholar-Athletes. Michael Azira signed with the Seattle Sounders of the MLS.
 

2012:

Finished as runner-up at the 2012 NAIA Men's Soccer National Championship. Finished 17-5-2 overall and 9-2 in the SSAC, winning the SSAC Regular Season Championship. Finished ranked 2nd in the NAIA. Stephen Okai named SSAC and NAIA Player of the Year. Chris Dillon named SSAC Defensive Player of the Year. Gaetan Massiah named SSAC Freshman of the Year. Dillon, Massiah and Okai named All-Conference. Xavier Audergon, Naissim Ayadi and Alvaro Pichardo named 2nd-Team All-SSAC. Massiah named to All-Freshman Team. Massiah, Okai and Pierre Mangold named to NAIA All-Tournament Team. Okai named 1st-Team NAIA, Dillon and Massiah named 2nd-Team. Deshorn Brown and Okai drafted in the MLS Superdraft.
 

2011:

Roy Patton named head coach. Finished season 16-3-1 overall and 10-1-1 in the SSAC. Advanced to the NAIA National Tournament. SSAC Regular Season Champions. Deshorn Brown named 1st-Team NAIA All-American, SSAC Player of the Year and SSAC Offensive Player of the Year. Michael Azira named Honorable Mention NAIA All-American and SSAC Newcomer of the Year. Chris Dillon and Stephen Okai named 2nd-Team NAIA All-American. Roy Patton named SSAC Coach of the Year. Azira, Brown, Dillon and Okai named All-Conference. Sam Blackburn named 2nd-Team All-Conference.
 

2010:

Finished 17-4-2 overall and 4-0-1 in SSAC play. Advanced to the Round of 4 at the NAIA National Tournament. Won the SSAC Tournament Championship. Deshorn Brown named 1st-Team NAIA All-American, SSAC Player of the Year, SSAC Offensive Player of the Year and SSAC Freshman of the Year. Chris Dillon and Stephen Okai named 1st-Team NAIA All-American. Dillon, Okai, Jason Williams and Brown named All-Conference.

2009:

The Rams finished the year 9-11 and 3-2. Chris Dillon was named Honorable Mention NAIA All-American. Mobile qualified for nationals and fell 0-2 at Embry-Riddle in the Opening Round. Rams beat William Carey for the GCAC Championship and defeated Asbury College for the NAIA Unaffiliated Championship. Jason Williams, Dillon and Onesimus Ikungo were named All-GCAC.
 

2008:

Finished the season at 13-7-2 and ranked #14 in the NAIA Top-25. Won the GCAC Championship and hosted a NAIA National Championship Opening Round game, where they beat UT-Brownsville. Mobile advanced to the Elite 8 of the NAIA National Tournament before falling to Bethel. Matt Watts was named 2nd-Team NAIA All-American, while Ruben Diaz was an Honorable Mention selection. Watts was named GCAC Player of the Year, while Jason Williams, Thomas Wharf, David Maddren, Diaz and Jack St. Hilaire joined him as All-GCAC selections.

2007:

Rams finished the season with a 14-5-1 overall record and finished the season ranked #6 in the NAIA Top-25. Earned the program's 11th trip to the NAIA National Tournament, but lost to Embry-Riddle. Thomas Wharf, Caetano Lima and Ruben Diaz were named 3rd-Team NAIA All-Americans. Matt Watts and Adrian Rochofski earned Honorable Mention All-American honors.

2006:

Finished the season with a 7-9 mark. Knocked out of the Region XIII Tournament by Lee in the semifinals.

2005:

Finished the season with a 4-8-3 record. Received the number 3 seed in the Region XIII Tournament and fell to Lee in the semifinals.

2004:

Finished the season with a 12-6-1 overall record. Won the regular season Gulf Coast Athletic Conference championship. Lost to Azusa Pacific University in the first round of the NAIA National Tournament.

2003:

The men's soccer team finished the season with a 16-5 overall record and lost to Rio Grande, 3-1 in the Quarterfinals of the NAIA National Tournament.  Mobile hosted the Region XIII Tournament as a number one seed and defeated Auburn University Montgomery, 3-1 to win the Region XIII Tournament.  Jamie Ferguson was named a NAIA First-Team All-American for the second-consecutive year.  Darren Toby was named a NAIA Third-Team All-American.  Brady Bryant and Tommy Sarkkinen were each named NAIA All-American Honorable Mention.

2002:

NAIA NATIONAL CHAMPIONS: The men's soccer team finished the season with a 18-4-1 overall record and defeated Park University, 2-1 to win the school their first ever NAIA National Championship in men's soccer.  James Gledhill was named MVP of the NAIA National Tournament.  Andrew Bayliss, Jamie Ferguson, James Gledhill and Chris Williams were each named NAIA First-Team All-Americans. Head coach Peter Fuller was named the NAIA National Coach of the Year for the third time in his career and second time at Mobile.

2001:

The men's soccer team finished the season with a 12-5-2 overall record.   Aduato Neto, Ousmane Coulibaly and Steven Linpow were each named NAIA First Team All-Americans.

2000:

The men's soccer team finished the season with a 15-8-1 overall record.  The Rams won the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference Championship and the Region XIII Tournament Championship.  Mobile advanced to the Final Four of the NAIA National Tournament and lost to Auburn University Montgomery 1-0 in the semifinals.  Ousmane Coulibaly and Adauto Neto were each named NAIA First-Team All-Americans.  James Gledhill was named a NAIA Second-Team All-American.  Chris Williams was named a NAIA All-American Honorable Mention.

1999:

The men's soccer team finished the season with a 23-2-1 overall record.  Mobile finished the regular season undefeated.  The Rams advanced to the NAIA National Championship game for only the second time in school history, where they lost to Lindsey Wilson College, 2-1.  Head coach Peter Fuller was named NAIA National Coach of the Year.

1998:

The men's soccer team finished the season with a 15-7 overall record and was ranked tenth in the final NAIA regular season poll.  Mobile lost in the Quarterfinals of the NAIA National Tournament to Lindsey Wilson College, 3-0. Boniventure Maurti and Matt Miller were each named NAIA First Team All-Americans. Matt Miller was selected to play in the Umbro Senior Bowl.  Five players were selected to the Gulf Coast Athletic All-Conference Team.

1997:

The men's soccer team advanced to the Final Four of the NAIA Tournament for the first time in school history and lost to Lockhurst College, 4-3 in the Semi-Finals. Junior Noel and Paul Oyuga were each named NAIA All-Americans.

1996:

The men's soccer team finished in third place in the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference.

1995:

Peter Fuller is named the new head coach of the University of Mobile men's soccer team.  The men's soccer team finished the season with a 17-4 overall record and advanced to the Quarterfinals of the NAIA National Tournament where they lost to Midwestern State, 3-1.

1994:

The men's soccer team finished the season with a 22-4-0 overall record and were ranked second in the final NAIA regular season poll.  Mobile advanced to the NAIA National Championship game for the first time in school history where they lost to West Virginia Wesleyan, 4-2.  Glenn Benjamin, Kevin Denerez, Claude Hunt, Kirk Trotman, Mickey Trotman and Dencho Vassilev were all named to the Gulf Coast Athletic All-Conference Team. Kevin Denerez, Kirk Trotman and Mickey Trotman were each named NAIA All-Americans. Dencho Vassilev was named a NAIA Academic All-American. Nigel Davidson, Kevin Denerez, Kirk Trotman and Dencho Vassilev were each selected to play in the Senior Classic.

1993:

The men's soccer team finished the season with a 15-5-3 overall record and won the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference regular season championship for the first time in school history.  Mobile was ranked second in the final NAIA regular season poll.  The Rams made their first appearance ever at the NAIA National Tournament where they advanced to the Final Four and lost to Lynn University, 3-1 in the Semi-Finals.   Craig McMillan, Kirk Trotman, Rob Harradine and Dencho Vassilev were all named to the All-District 30 First-Team. Lowell Clarke, Glen Benjamin, Jose Rojas, Mickey Trotman and Colen Buck were all named to the All-District 30 Second-Team. Dencho Vassilev and Kirk Trotman were named to All-Area 7 First-Team. Rob Harradine was named to the All-Area 7 Second-Team. Dencho Vassilev was named a NAIA First-Team All-American.  Kirk Trotman was named a NAIA Third-Team All-American.  Kirk Trotman was named a Second-Team NSCAA All-American. Rob Harradine and Dencho Vassilev were each named to the NAIA All-Tournament Team. Dencho Vassilev was named as a NAIA Academic All-American. Dencho Vassilev was named Most Valuable Player of NAIA National Tournament. Coach Bob Gray was named NSCAA Regional Coach of the Year.

1992:

The men's soccer team finished the season with a 14-4-1 overall record.  Dencho Vassilev, Kirk Trotman, Lee Chalmers and Rob Harradine were all named to the NAIA District 30 First-Team. Nigel Davidson, Fillippo Garcia, Lowell Clarke and Augusto Luna were named to the NAIA District 30 Honorable Mention Team.  Dencho Vassilev and Kirk Trotman were named to the NAIA Area Seven First-Team. Lee Chalmers and Rob Harradine were both named to the NAIA Area Seven Second-Team. Kirk Trotman was named to the NSCAA NAIA All-South Third Team. Dencho Vassilev was named a NAIA Third-Team All-American. Kirk Trotman was named a NAIA All-American Honorable Mention.

1991:

Bob Grube was named the first head coach of the first University of Mobile men's soccer team.  The men's soccer team finished their first season with a 5-12-1 overall record. Augusto Luna and Heath Hartley were named to the Gulf Coast Athletic All-Conference Team and the NAIA All-District 30 Team.
