MONTGOMERY, Ala. - In a rematch between two SSAC rivals on Wednesday night, Nov. 9, the fourth-ranked University of Mobile Men's Soccer team went to battle with No. 10 William Carey in the semifinals of the 2022 SSAC Men's Soccer Championship Tournament. After falling 1-0 to the Crusaders during the regular season, it was Mobile who came out on top in postseason play, shutting out William Carey, 3-0. With the win, Mobile advances to the 2022 SSAC Men's Soccer Championship for the second-straight season.
How It Happened
Despite playing one of the worst matches of the season in the 4-3 overtime win over Faulkner last week in the first round of the conference tournament, the Rams looked fresh and complete on Wednesday night against William Carey, controlling possession of the ball for the majority of the match.
The Rams earned a penalty kick in the 31st minute of the match after a Crusader was called for a hand ball in the box. Sebastian Jorgge, who entered the match with a perfect 3-for-3 line in penalty kick attempts this year, took the free shot and notched the goal for his fourth score of the season. From there, Mobile held a 1-0 lead at halftime.
In the second half, great ball movement halfway through the half for Mobile led to Jorgge's second goal on the night, with Zacharia Hasler earning the assist. Jorgge's second goal of the match came in the 66th minute and was a big confidence booster for Mobile. The multi-goal match is the first of the season for Jorgge.
As time continued to tick off the clock, desperation began to sit in on the William Carey side as the Crusaders continued to press deep into Mobile territory. However, Mobile managed to put the Crusaders away in the 88th minute with the finishing goal off the foot of Zacharia Hasler. Maxime Benoit was credited with the assist. From there, the Rams shut out the Crusaders, 3-0.
In the win, Mobile out-shot William Carey 11-9 and took four total corner kicks. William Carey recorded 12 corner kicks in the defeat, but had nothing to show for them. In the net for the Rams, Ty Turner looked great, collecting three saves on three shots faced. Six of Mobile's 11 shots were on target.
