HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The University of Mobile Men's and Women's Outdoor Track and Field teams competed in the Carey Last Chance hosted by William Carey University in Hattiesburg, Miss. on Friday, May 13 for the final opportunity to qualify in events for the upcoming 2022 NAIA Outdoor Track and Field National Championships. The Mickey Miller Blackwell Stadium in Gulf Shores, Ala. is the host site for this year's national championships and is scheduled for May 25-27, 2022.
Prior to the Carey Last Chance on Friday, a total 17 Rams from the University of Mobile Outdoor Track and Field teams have managed to qualify for this year's nationals, with 12 coming from the women's team at Mobile.
In the Carey Last Chance, Jhanya Quinones was the lone Ram to qualify for events in Hattiesburg, qualifying in not one, but two more events in addition to the women's 4x400 relay which her and three teammates qualified for last month.
Quinones qualified in the women's 200 meters with a time of 24.65 seconds, placing her second overall in the event. Additionally, Quinones qualified in the women's long jump with a mark of 5.80 meters, earning the junior with a first-place finish in the event.
The women's outdoor track and field team at Mobile managed to claim back-to-back SSAC Women's Outdoor Track and Field Championships two weeks ago and took first overall out of 10 teams in the Carey Last Chance with a score of 85 points. Mobile beat out conference opponents William Carey and Loyola (La.) in the meet.
On the men's side, Mobile placed sixth overall with 23 points out of 11 competing teams. Five Rams will represent the team at nationals this season.
Mobile Head Track and Field Coach Andy Canegitta will travel to Gulf Shores next week with coaching staff and student-athletes who qualified in hopes to bring one or multiple national championships home to the University of Mobile Athletic Department.
